DAYTON, Ohio – The IU Indy women's basketball team takes a quick road trip to Dayton, Ohio to face the Wright State Raiders on Wednesday, Feb. 5 before returning to the Jungle on Saturday. The Raiders and Jags are set for a 7:00 PM tip on ESPN+.
The IU Indy Jaguars couldn't keep pace with the Green Bay Phoenix on Sunday afternoon, falling 76-54 in The Jungle. Green Bay came out firing on all cylinders, never relinquishing control and leading for all but one minute of the game. The Jaguars struggled to
find any rhythm and were ultimately outmatched by the Phoenix's offense.
While the Jags are averaging 60.5 points per game,
Katie Davidson leads the team in scoring with 15.5 points per game since her return to the court. Newcomer
Shania Nichols-Vannett however led the team in scoring for the majority of the season with 10.4 points
per game. The sophomore totaled a career-high 37 points in the loss against Southern Illinois which puts her at second in the Horizon League for total points scored by a player in a single game this season.
Davidson is one of the key players for the Jags and was voted Horizon League Preseason All-League Second Team after finishing the 2023-24 season averaging 16.4 points per game. Unfortunately, due to injury, Davidson left the Jags' second game of the season at Ball State in the first quarter, playing just eight minutes in the loss. She made her long awaited return in IU Indy's win over Robert Morris after missing 12 games. Since her return she tallied eight straight double-digit games before the Jags' loss to Green Bay, in which she was held scoreless. Davidson tallied her 1,000 career point in the Jags' loss to Milwaukee.
Azyah Newson-Cole earned her first career #HLWBB Freshman of the Week award after her performance in the Jags' victory over Youngstown State on December 28. The redshirt freshman totaled a career-high tying 13 points as well as five rebounds, two assists and one steal. Newson-Cole continues to hold a strong presence on the court averaging 6.0 points per game and 1.9 assists per game making 15 starts for the Jaguars.
Coach
Kate Bruce's squad was picked to finish tenth in the Horizon League Preseason Poll, just ahead of Robert Morris. The Jags will look to fight their way through the Horizon League in hopes of outdoing their preseason rank. They currently sit in tenth with a 4-9 conference
mark. Meanwhile, Wright State sits right above them in ninth with a 4-9 record and 6-17 overall record.
The Raiders hold the edge in the all-time series at 15-9 but the Jaguars took the last meeting with a 75-63 victory in the Jungle on Jan. 15.
Graduate student Amaya Staton leads the Raiders with seven double-doubles on the season. She recorded her seventh in just two periods in a 75-67 win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday, February 1. Staton was in double-figures in scoring and rebounding at the half, tallying a team leading 12 points and 10 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. Staton ended the day recording 16 points while grabbing 13 off the backboard. Staton also leads the league in blocks with 39 on the season and rebounds with 179, averaging 7.8 per game.
