HINCKLEY, Ohio - Senior
Colten Girgis carded a 2-under 68 on day one of the weather shortened Cleveland State Invitational on Monday (Sept. 30) as the Jaguars posted a round of 284 at Pine Hills Golf Course. The Jaguars sit third among the nine-team field, trailing only Oakland (276) and Northern Kentucky (278) heading into Tuesday's finale.
The tournament was originally slated for 54 holes, but was shortened to 36 due to heavy rain in Northeast Ohio.
Girgis notched four birdies during his round, quickly getting to 2-under with birdies on two of his opening four holes of the day.
"I kept it pretty simple today. I really focused on hitting committed shots and striking the ball well and made a couple of good swings to birdie both par-5s," Girgis said. "To play better tomorrow, I'm going to need to make a couple of putts. I gave myself a bunch of looks today, but none of them dropped. In the end, if I keep making good committed swings, I can give myself a shot tomorrow."
Sam McWilliams,
Noah Kirsch and
Morgan Tournemire all shot 1-over 71 on Monday with Kirsch making eagle on the par-5, No. 15. Both
Harry Ward and
Titus Boswell shot 2-over 72 and
Brady Schier carded 3-over 73.
Freshman
Daymian Rij rounded out the lineup at 4-over 74 and
Greg Miller made his collegiate debut at 7-over 77.
Oakland's Ben Willis leads the field at 4-under while teammate Luke Kelly is second at 3-under. Girgis is one of four players two shots off the lead heading into Tuesday's final round.
Play will resume at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
