ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IU Indianapolis men's golf team posted scores of 302 and 300 on day one of the Golden Grizzlies Intercollegiate, hosted by Oakland University at the Katke-Cousins Golf Course. The Jaguars are ninth among the 15-team field at 602 (302-300) heading into Sunday's finale.
Brady Schier paced the Jaguars on Saturday at 147 (73-74) and freshman
Daymian Rij and redshirt junior
Sam McWilliams both ended the day at 151. Rij went 75 in the opening round and followed with a 76 while McWilliams followed up his morning 77 with a 74 in the afternoon.
Colten Girgis carded rounds of 77 and 76 while
Noah Kirsch shot 77 and 84.
"It's definitely a very tough course we are playing. A lot of the scores from all the teams are higher than normal, but that was expected," Schier said. "The course is really firm with very fast greens. I hit the ball very solid today and gave myself a lot of decent birdie looks and tap-in pars.
"It's definitely a course that you need to play very strategically and with a lot of confidence. I think tomorrow the team just needs to trust in their knowledge of the course and play hard. If we can play the course smart and make a few more putts than we did today, we could easily move way up the leaderboard tomorrow."
In round one, Schier had half of the team's eight birdies in the opening 18. In round two, Schier had three birdies and McWilliams made two as part of his round of 74. For the second straight tournament to start his career, Rij continued to rattle off pars in the middle of the team lineup.
Butler leads the field at 3-under and Wright State is at even par 576 going into the final round. Wright State's Shane Ochs leads the field at 3-under 141 and four others are tied for second at 2-under.
