HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - On a day in which average scores moved up from Saturday's round, the IUPUI men's golf team showed improvement with a second round 299 at the Horizon League Championships on El Campeon at Mission Inn Resort. The Jaguars made a six stroke improvement from Saturday's round and remain in seventh-place at 604 (305-299).Â
Senior
Taylor Gardner shot even par 72 on Sunday (Apr. 21) and freshman
Titus Boswell turned in 3-over 75. The rest of the lineup -
Kevin Tillery,
Morgan Tournemire and
Brady Schier - all posted second round scores of 76 apiece.Â
"I'm proud of the guys," head coach
Jamie Broce said. "I think we learned some things from the day before and managed the round a little better. It helped starting on the back nine so we could build a little momentum early and get feeling good about ourselves.Â
"We didn't finish particularly well, but all in all, I'm proud of the men."
Gardner was 3-under at the turn and 4-under through 10 holes, but gave back three shots with three straight bogeys. After making four straight pars, he came in with a bogey on No. 9 to close at even par. Boswell was 3-under through five, but also gave back three shots on his next four holes to sit even at the turn. A birdie on No. 1 got him back to 1-under before he ultimately closed at 3-over 75.Â
Tillery's round was hindered by one bad hole as he made seven on the par-3, No. 15. Otherwise, he was even par for the day with birdies on Nos. 1 and 16. Both Schier and Tournemire each had a pair of birdies on their scorecards as well.Â
Boswell leads the team with seven birdies after two rounds.Â
Wright State leads the 10-team field at even par 576 and Purdue Fort Wayne's Kasey Lilly tops the leaderboard at 4-under 140 (68-72) heading into Monday's final round. IUPUI will tee off at 1:10 p.m. on Monday.Â
