MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD TEAMS READY FOR #HLTF INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS

Jaguars to compete in Youngstown on Saturday (Feb. 24) and Sunday (Feb. 25)

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The IUPUI men's and women's track and field programs will head to Youngstown, Ohio, to participate in this weekend's Horizon League Indoor Track and Field Championships inside WATTS on the YSU campus. Events will run all day Saturday (Feb. 24) and Sunday (Feb. 25) with selected sessions being broadcast on ESPN+. 

Head coach Justin Roeder's team will rely exclusively on its distance crew to accumulate points at the championships as the Jaguars will compete in four individual events and two relays. In the 5,000m event, the Jaguars have four of the top-10 seeds in Andrew Whitinger, Eric Petersen, Mitchell Gits and Nick Perkins. Whitinger broke the school record in the 5K with a time of 14:04.12 in Boston earlier this season. Whitinger is also the team's top seed in the 3,000m event, having run 8:14.81 this season. Petersen and Gits also rank among the league's top 15 in the 3K. Freshman Luke Shappell is the team's top seed in the mile, having run 4:13.60, while Will Clark has clocked a season-best time of 4:17.77. Alex Alba is the team's top entry in the 800m event with a season-best time of 1:58.47. 

On the women's side, head coach Antonio McDaniel's team is keyed by distance ace Ellie Cates who plans to compete in the mile (4:56.76), 3,000m (9:43.28) and 5,000,m (16:59.96) this weekend. Cates has broken school records in the mile and 3K this season and is headlines a group that also includes Madison Fry and Laci Provenzano. Sophomore Kyla Kante leads the hurdles group while classmate Modupe Awosanya looks to repeat as league champion in the long jump. Both Morgan Hoard and Paige Laffoon are aiming to make the podium in multis and sophomore Wini Barnett ranks No. 8 in the league in the 800m event. 

The high jump crew is led by sophomore Jada-Marie Davis and freshman Journey Howard while sophomore Reese McCuan is the team's top entry in the triple jump.
