BOSTON - Senior
Andrew Whitinger continued his onslaught on the IUPUI record book on Saturday (Feb. 10), taking down the program's 5K record again at the BU David Hemery Valentine Invitational. Whitinger won the 5K event in a time of 14:04.12 to take 10 more seconds off his old school record, outrunning a strong contingent of competition in the process.
"Was really happy with the race today," Whitinger said. "I got out towards the back of the race to try and settle in and stay out of traffic. I moved up through the race and took the lead with 500 meters left. I'm really happy with the close to get a PR and a win.
"Three PR's this morning from the Jags makes me really excited about where our fitness is looking."
While Whitinger stole the headlines, all three Jaguars that competed in the 5K had strong efforts on Saturday.
Eric Petersen placed second in his heat in a time 14:27.11, taking three seconds off his previous best.
Mitchell Gits turned in a time of 14:34.71 to take a second off his previous best mark.
Later in the evening,
Grant Moon took to the track for the 3,000m event, running a time of 8:34.64.
Saturday's meet marked the Jaguars final tune-up before the upcoming Horizon League Indoor Championships in Youngstown, Ohio, in two weeks.
