Box Score CHARLESTON, Ill. – The IU Indy men's tennis team competed at the Eastern Illinois Invitational this past weekend with both
Pumiphat Sukkho and
Will Thurin coming out on top of their respective flights. The doubles duo of Thurin and
Jai Dutta also won the B flight doubles tournament. The Jags sent four student-athletes to represent IU Indy with
Noah Viste, Sukkho, Thurin and Dutta all making the trip.
Freshman Sukkho represented the Jags in the B flight where he took the overall title. Sukkho defeated Northern Kentucky's Xavier Ecarma in the opening round (1-6, 6-3, 10-5). He then took down Eastern Illinois' Tyler Carlin (6-2, 6-2) to advance to the flight B championship. He defeated EIU's Duarte Trocada to take the flight B title (6-3, 7-6 (4)). He finished 3-0 in singles play to earn the first-place finish in the B flight.
Senior
Will Thurin also earned a first-place finish for the Jags, earning the top spot in the C flight. Thurin took the opening match over Lewis' Kristen Pavitt (6-0, 6-0). He then defeated EIU's Gui Cauvilla (6-2, 6-0) to advance to the championship. In the final match, Thurin defeated EIU's Will Hays to earn the first-place finish (7-6 (7), 6-1).
Freshman
Jai Dutta ultimately took first in the D flight after going 2-1 on the weekend. He defeated EIU's Fabien Planchard (6-2, ret.) then earned the title with a win over Lewis' Grant Miller (6-0, 6-0). He played a one off match against Pato Muriel where he fell (6-7(2), 6-4, 10-7), but after recording the best record in the D flight he ultimately won the flight.
Viste played in the Flight A bracket for the Jags, finishing in sixth. The senior fell in the opening round to Northern Kentucky's Emilio Bravo (6-2, 6-2). He then defeated Indrek Soome from Lewis (6-3, 6-4) to make it to the consolation championship. Viste fell to Eastern Illinois' Zach White (7-5, 6-0) to finish in sixth.
In doubles play, Viste and Sukkho played in the A flight where they finished seventh. The Jags' duo fell in the opening round, 6-4, then dropped the next match, 6-3. They took seventh after defeated Lewis' partnership, 6-1.
Dutta and Thurin partnered together to take the title in the B flight. They defeated EIU's Schut and Hays in the opening match, 6-3. Thurin and Dutta then fell to EIU's Cauville and Hays (6-4) but then defeated EIU's Wiggett and Trocado (7-6(5)) to take the title since Wiggett and Trocado were the only other duo to have a 2-1 record in doubles play.
The IU Indy men's tennis team will close out their fall season this weekend when they travel back to Cleveland, Ohio for the Cleveland State Invitational.
