RICHMOND, Ky. - The IUPUI men's golf team finished off a fourth-place finish at the season opening EKU Colonel Classic on Friday (Sept. 1), posting a final round 3-over 283 at the University Club at Arlington. The Jaguars used a balanced effort on the tournament's final day to place fourth among the 12-team field at 848 (290-275-283).

Kevin Tillery and Taylor Gardner both shot 1-under 69 on Friday and Morgan Tournemire carded 1-over 71. Both Titus Boswell and Colten Girgis shot 4-over 74 to round out the Jaguars' lineup.

"Definitely a step in the right direction for us this week. It felt good to come out firing and hang around the top of the leaderboard," Tillery said. "It was also nice to see some of the new guys compete and throw some solid rounds in there.

"I just played pretty steady all three rounds. I didn't really do anything special. I just kept my head down and gutted out some solid scores. We have some things we need to work on, but we definitely have some good momentum moving forward."

Tournemire finished the tournament at 4-under 206 (70-65-71) for a runner-up finish among the 91-player field, four shots behind medalist Reeve Felner of Belmont. It was his first career top-10 finish of his collegiate career. Tillery also collected a top-10 finish at 1-under 209 (72-69-68) and Gardner closed at 214 (76-69-69).

Boswell made his collegiate debut, finishing at 218 (72-72-74) and Colten Girgis rounded out the group at 231 (85-72-74).

"It was a really fun start to the year," head coach Jamie Broce said. "The guys were nervous and excited. Lots of great golf and we showed some grit when we got off to a poor start. These guys have some heart and we'll see how that shapes up for us the next few weeks with some good competition."

Noah Kirsch led IUPUI's individual entries at 11-over 221 (73-73-75) and Brady Schier finished at 227 (72-82-73).

Belmont won the team title at 3-under 837, seven shots ahead of host Eastern Kentucky. Bellarmine was third at 5-over 845 while the Jags defeated Austin Peay by one stroke and Northern Kentucky by two shots. The Jaguars will return to action on Sept. 9-10 when they participate in the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational.
