INDIANAPOLIS - Seven members of the IUPUI men's and women's track and field teams earned recognition from the Horizon League on Tuesday (May 30) as the league announced its #HLTF Outdoor All-Academic Teams. Three members of the women's team -
Madison Fry,
Claire Mehling and
Katie Moore - were voted to the All-Academic Teams while four members of the men's team -
Will Clark,
Nate Kaiser,
Grant Moon and
Wilson Whicker - were honorable mention selections.
Fry, a junior, earned her fourth Horizon League All-Academic Team award of her career. This outdoor season, she finished eighth in the Horizon League in the 3,000m steeplechase in just her second time running the event, clocking a time of 11:30.80. She later completed a tough double, also competing in the 5,000m event at the outdoor championships. This spring, she also earned the IUPUI cross country team's Coaches Award at this year's 2023 Jag Awards. She's maintained a 4.0 grade point average while majoring in exercise science.
Mehling, a senior, was an honorable mention honoree during the 2023 indoor season. She finished eighth in the Horizon League in the 10,000m event in her first career entry in the event, running a time of 37:59.87 to move to No. 10 on the IUPUI program's all-time list. She was honored as IUPUI's Dorothy Cheesman Award winner at the 2023 Jag Awards, given to the highest women's GPA among the graduating seniors. She finished her academic career with a 3.96 grade point average while majoring in biology, medical humanities and health studies.
Moore, a sophomore, earned her second straight All-Academic Team award after also being honored during indoor season. She finished fifth in the Horizon League in the heptathlon with a school record score of 4,260 points and was sixth in the league with a 400m hurdles time of 1:03.09, also setting a new school record. She registered new personal bests in the 200m dash, high jump and shot put at the Horizon League Outdoor Championships. Academically, she holds a 3.98 GPA in sports management.
Clark, a sophomore, collected his second career honorable mention award, having also being voted honorable mention during cross country season. He ran both the 1,500m and 5,000m events at the Horizon League Championships and owned the team's best 1,500m time of the year, running 3:58.27 at the RedHawk Invitational on Apr. 29. He ranked second on the team in the 5K this season with a time of 14:42.24 on Apr. 14. Academically, Clark has maintained a 3.96 GPA while majoring in chemistry.
Kaiser, a redshirt junior, was voted the league's Co-Championship Championship Performer in running events after winning both the 5K and 10K at the outdoor championships. He was the team's top performers in both events during the outdoor season, moving to No. 2 on the program's all-time list in the 5K and No. 3 in the 10K. It marked his second career honorable mention award as he also collected honorable mention accolades in the 2022 outdoor season. Academically, he's earned a 3.34 GPA while majoring in finance.
Moon, a redshirt sophomore, was the 2021 Horizon League Cross Country Freshman of the Year and earned his second career All-Academic Team award. He scored points in both the 10K and 5K at the Horizon League Outdoor Championships, placing fifth in the 5K and sixth in the 10K. His 10K time of 30:18.11 placed him No. 6 on IUPUI's all-time list in the event. Academically, Moon has maintained a 3.75 grade point average while majoring in accounting and finance.
Whicker, a junior, was honored for the third time in his career as he was on the 2023 Horizon League Indoor Track & Field Men's All-Academic Team and an honorable mention pick during the 2022 indoor season. He competed in the 1,500m event at the Horizon League Championships during the outdoor season. Academically, he's maintained a 3.86 grade point average while majoring in accounting and finance.
