FIVE JAGS CHOSEN TO HORIZON LEAGUE OUTDOOR TRACK & FIELD ALL-ACADEMIC TEAM

Three IUPUI women and two men voted to the All-Academic Teams

INDIANAPOLIS - For the second time in as many weeks, five members of the IUPUI men's and women's track and field teams have earned Horizon League All-Academic Team honors as the league honored its outdoor student-athletes on Wednesday (June 23). This time around, three members of the women's program and two members of the men's team were recognized. 

Sabrina Elder and Lana Pham were repeat honorees after earning indoor honors last week and joined by Katelyn Murphy on the outdoor All-Academic Team. In addition, Eric Hoffman and Dakota Merkel were repeat honorees after earning indoor accolades last week. 

Elder earned her second career All-Academic Team honor and has maintained a 3.99 grade point average while majoring in exercise science. She placed fourth in the Horizon League in the 800m event during the outdoor season, clocking a time of 2:14.62 at the league championships. She earned an automatic berth in the finals after running a time of 2:14.96 in the preliminary round. Her finals time was a season-best effort and placed her at No. 5 on the program's all-time list in the event. 

Murphy earned her third career All-Academic Team award and finished with a 3.88 grade point average towards her Master's degree in Social Work. She capped her collegiate running career as the Horizon League champion in the 1,500m event by clocking a time of 4:33.47 in the finals. She also scored points in the 5,000m event, placing eighth overall in a time of 17:48.49. She closed her career ranked No. 2 on the program's all-time list in the 1,500m, No. 3 in the 3,000m (10:12.22) and 5,000m (17:23.29) events. 

Pham collected her fourth career All-Academic Team honor and has maintained a 3.98 grade point average while majoring in exercise science. She had a season-best jump of 1.50m (4' 11'') on two different occasions during the outdoor season and ends her career at No. 3 on the program's all-time list in the event.

Hoffman earned his seventh career All-Academic Team award and has maintained a 3.83 grade point average while majoring in social studies education. He was the Horizon League runner-up in the 1,500m event with a personal best time of 3:53.20 in the finals after qualifying seventh in the prelims. He also placed fifth in the 800m event with a time of 1:55.08. 

Merkel collected his sixth career All-Academic Team award and has maintained a 3.96 grade point average while majoring in biology. He just missed All-Horizon League honors by placing fourth in the 1,500m event with a time of 3:55.44, taking almost six seconds off his preliminary heat time.
