INDIANAPOLIS - The IUPUI women's basketball team began the 2021-22 season Tuesday night and while they continue to drive towards the Horizon League championship, Head coach
Austin Parkinson is eager to continue that championship drive in the future with the signing of three top recruits to a National Letter of Intent.
The Jags added Teresa Maggio, Brianna Wooldridge and Jessica Carrothers, who was named the Gatorade Indiana Girls Basketball Player of the Year in 2021 after leading the Crown Point Bulldogs to an IHSAA 4A State Championship title during her junior season.
"Jess can be defined in one word. Winner!" said Coach Parkinson. "She was the best player in the state last year and carried her team to a state championship. Her ability to create her own shot and at the same time create for others is one of the reasons she is such a special player and will have such an impact at IUPUI."
Carrothers is a 5'8" guard out of Crown Point, Ind. and is currently the favorite for Indiana Miss Basketball for the 2021-22 season. Along with the Gatorade Player of the Year honor, she has earned Indiana Junior All-Star, Indiana Basketball Coaches Association Supreme 15 and Academic Honors. She will be a key piece in the future for the Jags.
Joining the Jags from Lafayette, Ind. is Teresa Maggio, a 5'5" guard for the McCutcheon High School Mavericks. Maggio averaged 21.4 points, 4.9 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 4.7 steals per game during her junior season in 2020-21.
"Teresa is a tough, feisty guard who competes at both ends of the floor," said Coach Parkinson. "She can stretch the defense from the three-point line as well as finish at the rim in traffic. Defensively she anticipates well and likes to get out in passing lanes leading to transition baskets."
Maggio earned 2021 Underclass Large School All State, J&C Big School All-Area Player of the Year, 2021 NCC All Conference First Team and IBCA Top 100 Underclass Showcase Nominee honors. She shows excellence on the court and off the court with a 4.0 GPA.
Joining Carrothers and Maggio is an out of state recruit, Brianna Wooldridge. Wooldridge, a 6'2" center out of Schaumburg, Ill., is currently ranked the #6 player in Illinois by Prep Girls Hoops.
"Bri is a versatile post player who has the unique ability to score in a number of different ways," said Coach Parkinson. "She has the quickness to take you off the dribble, strength to seal down low and the shooting touch from the three-point line. She is someone who knows how to win taking her team to state."
Wooldridge was named a IBCA 3rd team All Star and earned Southwest Suburban Red All Conference this past season as a junior and will look to bring strength under the basket for the Jags.
Carrothers, Maggio and Wooldridge will join Coach Parkinson's Horizon League Championship contender team during the 2022-23 season.
