Box Score MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Another double-double from
Macee Williams and another win for the IUPUI women's basketball team. The Jags took down Robert Morris 74-53 to remain perfect in Horizon League play.
IUPUI (8-1, 6-0) is off to the best start in program history and has started 6-0 in league play for the first time in school history after the win against Robert Morris (0-6, 0-6). The Jags have now won six-straight games by at least 20 points, another school record.
Williams showed why she is the two-time reigning Player of the Year for the Horizon League, scoring 26 points on 8-for-13 shooting and going 10-for-12 from the free throw line. Williams also grabbed 15 rebounds and led the Jaguars with four assists. The 15 rebounds are a season-high for Williams and the senior has now reached 20 points in five games this season.
"This was an important weekend for us to start the new year the right way and our team met the challenge," said head coach Austin Parkinson. "Macee was outstanding today and really patient with her decision making. Although it won't show up in the stat sheet, for two games Destiny's defense set the tone for our entire team. The effort on defense and ball movement was excellent.
Sydney Roule was second on the team with 12 points, going 4-for-7 from three point range and
Natalie Andersen scored nine points on three threes all coming in the second quarter.
Destiny Perkins finished the game with eight points and three steals and
Rachel McLimore added eight points to go along with five rebounds.
After making just 11 free throws in the last two games, IUPUI made it a point to get to the line, going 20-for-27 from the stripe, notching a season-high in makes. The free throw line was one of the biggest differences in the game as IUPUI only gave up five free throws to RMU and the Colonials converted on just two.
IUPUI has outrebounded its opponent in every game this season, holding a 40-26 advantage in this game. Behind Williams,
Morgan Allen was second on the team with six boards.
Early in the first, a 6-0 run for IUPUI put the Jags up 10-4 and after a Robert Morris basket, Roule connected with a shot click beating three to make it 13-6. Three-straight IUPUI free throws, two from Allen and one from Williams, gave the Jags their first double-digit lead. Andersen helped increase IUPUI's lead with threes on back-to-back possessions and two more free throws by Williams gave IUPUI a 10-point lead after the first quarter.
The second quarter began with Roule hitting another three and Williams making a layup before RMU got on the board. Andersen hit her third three of the half and after a layup by Allen, the Jags had doubled up the Colonials 34-17. After two scoreless minutes for both teams, Roule connected again from deep and after two buckets from RMU, the senior hit her fourth three of the half to end the run.
Williams hit a layup to put the Jags up 21 but RMU quickly cut in to the lead with a three. The half came to an end with
Destiny Perkins earning a three-point play and the Jags holding a 46-24 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, IUPUI held a 20-point lead after McLimore hit a layup but the offense went cold, allowing Robert Morris to climb back in to the game. Over the next four minutes, the Colonials used an 8-0 run to cut the lead to 12 before a
Katelyn O'Reilly jumper ended the run. From there, Williams took over with a three-point play and a layup before the buzzer, putting the Jags up 19 after three.
Williams continued the fourth with a three-point play and after the teams traded threes, the senior hit two more baskets to push the lead 67-41 and the game out of reach.
IUPUI will return home for two games next weekend against Northern Kentucky. The Jags will play host to the Norse on Friday (Jan. 8) and Saturday (Jan, 9) with both games starting at 6 p.m.
