WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TO HOST YOUNGSTOWN STATE ON FRIDAY

IUPUI women's basketball will host a zero waste night against the Penguins to promote recycling.

2/7/2019 11:45:00 AM

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's basketball is back home after a four-game road trip and looking to snap a two-game losing streak as the Jags take on Youngstown State on Friday (Feb. 8) at 7 p.m. in the Jungle.

IUPUI will be hosting a zero waste event as part of RecycleMania as IUPUI will compete against other colleges and universities for who can divert the most waste in a national recycling competition. IUPUI will also give fans a $5 concession voucher while supplies last.

The Jags are coming off of a seven point defeat at Wright State on Saturday (Feb. 2) that saw the Raiders take over during the first quarter and build its lead to 17 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. IUPUI came back, pulling within five points with under a minute left after a Holly Hoopingarner three but could not get closer as Wright State closed the game out at the free throw line.

Head coach Austin Parkinson's squad now welcomes Youngstown State to the Jungle as the jags will look to exact revenge for a 70-52 defeat the Penguins handed the Jags in the first meeting of the season on Jan. 5. The Jags held a 12-11 lead after the first quarter but Youngstown State slammed the door on the Jags offense over the second and third quarters and held IUPUI to just 29 percent from the field in the game.

The loss to the Penguins was the first and only time this season that IUPUI did not have a player reach double-figures, including the only time that Macee Williams has been held to less than ten points.

Youngstown State is currently on a five-game winning streak and is 9-2 in conference play with its only losses at Milwaukee and Green Bay. Over their last five games, all at home, the Penguins have not scored less than 73 points and their lowest margin of victory is an 11 point win against Northern Kentucky.

The Penguins currently lead the Horizon League with a 15.1 average margin of victory and the offense leads the league with 16 assists per game.

QUICK NOTES (full notes)
Jags Downed by Wright State
  • IUPUI held Wright State to just 37 percent shooting and 66 points, the lowest in the last six games for the Raiders.
  • For the first time in Horizon League play and just the fourth time all season, IUPUI hit fewer free throws than its opponent (10-11).
  • The Jaguars hit seven three to Wright State's six but lost for the second time in conference play when hitting more threes in the game.
  • IUPUI has now lost four-straight games to Wright State. The Jaguars took the first meeting between the two teams after IUPUI joined the Horizon League but since, Wright State has had the Jags' number, including knocking the Jags out of the Horizon League Tournament last season.
  • Hoopingarner led the Jaguars with six assists as IUPUI assisted on 15 of their 21 made baskets. It was the most assists Hoopingarner has had in her last ten games.
Bench Impact
  • IUPUI is 9-4 and 5-1 in Horizon League play when its bench outscores its opponents bench. The lone loss in league play being IUPUI's last game against Wright State. When the Jags' bench is outscored, IUPUI is just 4-5 on the season.
Hall of Points
  • Sydney Hall is the active leading scorer for IUPUI with 926 points.  With another 74 points this season, Hall would become the 25th player in school history to reach the 1,000 career point mark.
  • Hall is also the active leader in three-point shots made, having hit 199 in her career. Hall is now third all-time in school history and is 28 threes away from becoming the all-time three point shooter.
Magic Number 70
  • Scoring 70 points is an important sign for the Jags under head coach Austin Parkinson. In Parkinson's first eight seasons, IUPUI is 69-13 when hitting the 70-point mark. In those 13 losses, the most points scored by the Jags in regulation was 74 points. If IUPUI scores 75 points in regulation, the Jags are 58-0 under Parkinson.
  • The most points ever scored in a loss by the Jags under Parkinson was 83 in a 96-83 overtime loss to Miami (Ohio) in 2017.
  • IUPUI had won its last ten games when scoring at least 70 points before losing to Southern Illinois. IUPUI has since won five-straight when hitting the 70 points mark. All five conference wins have come with IUPUI reaching 70 points.
