INDIANAPOLIS – The first day of the 2019 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships started with a bang as IUPUI picked up a win in the men's 3-meter and the women broke two school records in the pool.
Senior
Krisztian Somhegyi picked up IUPUI's first win of the event on the diving boards with a win in the 3-meter event, winning his second-straight 3-meter championship in the Horizon League and fourth-straight conference championship in his career. Somhegyi came in to the event after finishing second in the prelims but edged out Oakland's Joe Smith by a score of 352.40 to 345.70.
In the pool, IUPUI's women took down school records in both the 200 Medley Relay and the 800 Freestyle Relay. In the first swim event of the night, the team of
Catrionna Bruce,
Aubrey Wing,
Mallory Buha and
Tori Kroon finished in third with a time of 1:41.21, beating the school record of 1:42.11 set at the 2016 Summit League Championships.
In the women's 800 Freestyle Relay, IUPUI was just edged out by Oakland as the team of
Meagan Ronci,
Maggie Hatfield,
Olivia Treski and
Andrea Hanas clocked a time of 7:24.69, shattering the school record by more than two seconds which was set at last season's championships.
The men had a strong night in the pool with the best finish for the Jags being a third-place finish in the 800 Freestyle Relay. The squad of
Jackson Sandala,
Ben Levart,
John Ragsdell and
Nick Hanas coming in with a time of 6:38.43, less than a second shy of another school record.
The men's team of Rylee Lohse,
Will Grintjes, Josh Barajas and
Mason Jung took fourth in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:29.89.
After the first day of competition, IUPU sits in second play in both the men's and women's competitions.
Day two of the 2019 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships will begin tomorrow (Feb. 14) with swimming prelims at 10 a.m.
