INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's basketball will look to rebound from a loss to Northern Kentucky as the Jaguars will take on Horizon League leading Wright State on Saturday (Feb. 2) to close out a four-game road trip.
After beginning the road trip with overtime wins against Milwaukee and Green Bay, IUPUI's offense got off to a slow start against the Norse but a
Holly Hoopingarner three almost sent the Jags to a third-straight overtime. Instead, the ball came back out of the hoop and the Jaguars fell 60-57.
The Jaguars managed to erase an 11-point first half deficit using a 15-2 run that spanned the second and third quarters but could not hold on to a four-point lead down the stretch scoring just three points in the last 3:30 of the game.
IUPUI will now have to focus their attention on to a streaking Wright State team that has won four-straight games and will look to win their fourth game in a row against IUPUI. In the conference opener for both teams this season, Wright State earned a 78-75 overtime win over the Jags in Indianapolis.
Five Jaguars scored in double-figures led by
Macee Williams who had 16 points but the Jags turned the ball over 17 times to just eight Raiders giveaways.
QUICK NOTES (full game notes)
Jags down by the Norse
- IUPUI was held to just 19 first half points, the lowest in the first half by IUPUI all season. It also ties the low for points in a half when the Jags scored 19 in the second half against Northern Iowa on Nov. 30.
- Macee Williams finished with 11 points after being held to just two points in the first half.
- Agatha Beier scored eight points for the Jags in the first half, a season high for the sophomore.
- The Jags last three games have been decided by an average of 2.7 points. In the three games previous, IUPUI had won by an average of 30. 7 points.
- IUPUI won the rebounding battle 30-29 but the 30 rebounds for IUPUI were the lowest pulled down by the Jags since grabbing 29 in a win over Indiana State (Dec. 3).
- IUPUI went 7-for-16 from three-point range. The 16 attempts were the lowest since also attempting 16 against Northern Kentucky in the first matchup with the Norse on Dec. 30. The 43 percent effort from deep is the second best mark of the season, behind a 47 percent day against VCU over Thanksgiving.
- For the first time this season, IUPUI lost a game in which they were leading with five minutes left to go in the game. The Jags were 9-0 and 5-0 in conference play before the loss to NKU.
Got to put up points
- IUPUI moved to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference play when scoring less than 60 points.
- The Jags are 8-3 and 5-1 in conference play when shooting better than 40 percent from the field.
- When IUPUI spreads the wealth, the Jags succeed. IUPUI is 13-3 on the season when having three or more players reach double-figures. IUPUI has yet to win a game (0-5) when two or less players reach the ten-point mark.
Bench Impact
- IUPUI is 9-3 and a perfect 5-0 in Horizon League play when its bench outscores its opponents bench. When the Jags' bench is outscored, IUPUI is just 4-5 on the season.
Winning from Deep
- Scoring from three is important for the Jags who are 11-4 and 7-1 in conference when hitting the same amount or more threes than their opponents. The loss to the Northern Kentucky was the first time in Horizon League action the Jags lost when hitting more threes.
The Jags in Extra Time
- IUPUI played back-to-back overtime games for the second time this season. The Jags went to an extra frame against Southern Illinois (Dec. 21) and Wright State (Dec. 28), losing both contests.
- The Jaguars have played in a school record five overtime games this season.
- IUPUI has now won two-straight overtime games in the same season for the first time since 1995-96.
Road Warriors
- IUPIU set a Division I school record with 13 wins away from home last season going 13-3 outside of Indianapolis. It was the first time since the 2013-14 season that IUPUI had won double-digit road contests. The Jaguars have only had two seasons in their Division I era (1998-99) with 10+ road wins and four total seasons in program history (since 1975-76) with 10+ road wins. The school record for road wins in a season is 14 when IUPUI went 14-3 in 1989-90.
- The Jags are currently 6-4 away from the Jungle and are 3-2 in Horizon League play on the road.
Hall of Points
- Sydney Hall is the active leading scorer for IUPUI with 926 points. With another 74 points this season, Hall could become the 25th player in school history to reach the 1,000 career point mark.
- Hall is also the active leader in three-point shots made, having hit 197 in her career. Hall is now third all-time in school history and is 30 threes away from becoming the all-time three point shooter.
Magic Number 70
- Scoring 70 points is an important sign for the Jags under head coach Austin Parkinson. In Parkinson's first eight seasons, IUPUI is 69-13 when hitting the 70-point mark. In those 13 losses, the most points scored by the Jags in regulation was 74 points. If IUPUI scores 75 points in regulation, the Jags are 58-0 under Parkinson.
- The most points ever scored in a loss by the Jags under Parkinson was 83 in a 96-83 overtime loss to Miami (Ohio) in 2017.
- IUPUI had won its last ten games when scoring at least 70 points before losing to Southern Illinois. IUPUI has since won five-straight when hitting the 70 points mark. All five conference wins have come with IUPUI reaching 70 points.
