CLEVELAND, Ohio – IUPUI women's basketball hits the road for the first time in Horizon League play to take on the 2-0 Cleveland State Vikings on Thursday (Jan. 3). The game against the Vikings tips off at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
The Jags (7-6, 1-1 Horizon) got back on track, breaking a four-game losing streak, with a dominating 70-48 win over Northern Kentucky. For the second-straight game IUPUI had five players score in double-figures, led by
Katelyn O'Reilly and
Tamya Sims who each scored 12 points. The offenses started slowly as IUPUI led 6-0 with less than five minutes in the first quarter. The Jags allowed a season-low six points in the first quarter to the Norse and held Northern Kentucky to just 36 percent shooting.
IUPUI poured it on in the second half getting up by as much as 27 as the Jags led wire-to-wire to earn their first Horizon League win of the year.
Cleveland State took their first two Horizon League games of the season with victories at Oakland and Detroit Mercy. Those wins broke a six-game losing streak the Vikings had been on to close out non-conference play.
The Vikings are a high-powered offense, scoring 70.2 points per game, led by Mariah Miller with 16.5 points per game. Jade Ely (15.1 ppg) and Mariah White (12.2 ppg) are second and third on the team and Savanna Crockett, who is averaging 11.8 points, has been named Horizon League Freshman of the Week four times this year.
QUICK NOTES
IUPUI Blows by the Norse
- For the second-straight game, IUPUI had five players score in double-figures. The Jags are now 7-2 when at least three players score in double-figures
- IUPUI committed just nine turnovers against the Norse, the second fewest of the year since the Jags gave the ball away just eight times against UTSA over the Thanksgiving tournament in San Antonio.
- The 22-point win against NKU was the second-largest margin of victory for IUPUI this season and the largest against a Division I opponent. IUPUI's next largest margin of victory was eight points (twice).
- Katelyn O'Reilly and Tamya Sims led the Jaguars in scoring as both players scored 12 points. It was a season-high for Sims who missed the first half of the season with an injury. With O'Reilly and Sims leading the way, it marks the first time that either Macee Williams or Holly Hoopingarner did not lead the team in scoring since O'Reilly led the Jags with 24 points in the season opener.
- Northern Kentucky's 48 points were the lowest a DI school has scored against IUPUI and it broke a streak of four-straight games opponents had scored at least 70 points against the Jags. The Norse shot just 36 percent in the game, marking the lowest shooting percentage since UTSA shot 33 percent.
- The Jags' nine steals on the night were tied for the most against a DI team this season, matching the nine steals the Jags had against Indiana State, the last win before the four-game losing streak.
Dishing the Rock
- IUPUI dished out 16 assists against Northern Kentucky and have now had double-digit assists in all but three games this season.
Owning the Stripe
- The Jags have made a living at the free throw line this season, attempting 247 to just 179 for their opponents. IUPUI been outshot from the free throw line in one game when Iowa got to the line 22 times to just seven for the Jags.
- IUPUI has attempted double-digit free throws in every game this season and at least 20 free throws in eight of their 13 contests.
Magic Number 70
- Scoring 70 points is an important sign for the Jags under head coach Austin Parkinson. In Parkinson's first eight seasons, IUPUI is 65-13 when hitting the 70-point mark. In those 13 losses, the most points scored by the Jags in regulation was 74 points. If IUPUI scores 75 points in regulation, the Jags are 55-0 under Parkinson.
- The most points ever scored in a loss by the Jags under Parkinson was 83 in a 96-83 overtime loss to Miami (Ohio) in 2017.
- IUPUI had won its last ten games when scoring at least 70 points before losing to Southern Illinois.
Conference Success
- Under Austin Parkinson, IUPUI has had unprecedented conference success. In the last six seasons, IUPUI has never finished worse than third and has four second-place finishes. During that time, IUPUI has never had fewer than nine conference wins and has had at least 11 wins in the other five seasons. The Jags finished with a school-record 13 conference wins a season ago.
- IUPUI has increased its conference win total in each of the last three seasons, winning 11 in 2015-16, 12 in 2016-17 and 13 in 2017-18. Before Austin Parkinson took over, IUPUI only had three double-digit wins in conference play and only one second place finish.
Hall of Points
- Sydney Hall is the active leading scorer for IUPUI with 871 points. With another 129 points this season, Hall could become the 25th player in school history to reach the 1,000 career point mark.
- Hall is also the active leader in three-point shots made, having hit 181 in her career. Hall is now third all-time in school history and is 46 threes away from becoming the all-time three point shooter.
Looking for 150
- With his next win, Austin Parkinson will earn his 150th career victory. Parkinson has long been the winningest coach in the history of IUPUI, breaking the former record of 97 held by Kris Simpson.
