1/12/2019 1:15:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's basketball remains home to take on Oakland on Sunday (Jan. 13) as the Jags will be looking for their second-straight win and move to 4-2 in Horizon League play. The game against the Golden Grizzlies will be on ESPN+ and Scott Agness will be handling the play-by-play duties.

IUPUI (9-7, 3-2 Horizon) is coming off one of its best defensive performances of the season against Detroit Mercy as the Jags held the Titans to just 16 first half points in the 82-47 win. IUPUI finished with four players in double-figures led by Macee Williams who had 17 first half points and finished with 19 in just 20 minutes of action.

Oakland (4-11, 1-3 Horizon) is coming off of an overtime loss at UIC on Friday and the Golden Grizzlies only win of the season came against Detroit Mercy. Against the Flames, Taylor Jones led Oakland with 21 points and 18 rebounds but finished just 8-of-28 from the field. The Golden Grizzlies were outscored 19-10 in the final quarter as UIC forced overtime.

All-time the Golden Grizzlies lead the series 24-15 but IUPUI has won four-straight in the series and five of the last six.The Jags took both regular season meetings with Oakland last year by 16 and 18 points and beat the Golden Grizzlies by seven in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament.

QUICK GAME NOTES (full game notes)
Jags take down the Titans
  • IUPUI cruised to a win over Detroit Mercy, beating the Titans 82-47. All three games against Detroit Mercy since the Jags have joined the Horizon League have been decided by at least 28 points.
  • Macee Williams led the Jags with 19 points on a very efficient 8-for-9 shooting. Williams was 7-for-7 from the field in the first half and was beating the Titans by herself 17-16 after the first 20 minutes. Williams played just 20 minutes, the second lowest amount of the season for the star sophomore.
  • IUPUI's defense set some season lows against the Titans holding Detroit Mercy to lows in field goals (13), field goal attempts (43), assists (2) and first half points (16). It was the first time all season IUPUI has allowed single digit points in both first half quarters. The Jags also held Detroit Mercy to just 30 percent from the floor and 10 percent from the three point line as the Titans went 1-for-10 from deep.
  • The Jags set a school record with 42 attempted three point shots, hitting just nine. Both Sydney Hall (13) and Holly Hoopingarner (10) attempted career-highs from behind the arc.
  • IUPUI owned the glass, outrebounding Detroit Mercy 54-29. The 54 rebounds and 30 offensive rebounds were both season-highs for the Jags.
  • IUPUI shot a season-high 28 free throws, hitting a season-best 21.
  • IUPUI dished out 20 assists, led by a career-high eight from Agatha Beier. It was the third time IUPUI has reached 20 assists this season. The eight assists by Beier are the most by a Jaguar since Kelsi Byrd dished out eight helpers against Oakland City on Nov. 11, 2016.
The Williams Way
  • Macee Williams continues to lead the Horizon League with 18.7 points per game. Williams has led the Jags in scoring 12 times and has hit double-figures in 15 games, including topping the 20-point mark seven times
  • Williams has also led the Jags in rebounding nine times, blocks eight times, steals five times and assists three times. The Veedersburg, Ind., native has recorded four double-doubles.
  • Williams currently has 714 points in her career and could be the first player in IUPUI history to record 1,000 career points in her first two seasons as a Jaguar. To do this, Williams would need 286 more points, an average of 22 points in her last 13 regular season games.
Conference Success
  • Under Austin Parkinson, IUPUI has had unprecedented conference success. In the last six seasons, IUPUI has never finished worse than third and has four second-place finishes. During that time, IUPUI has never had fewer than nine conference wins and has had at least 11 wins in the other five seasons. The Jags finished with a school-record 13 conference wins a season ago.
  • IUPUI has increased its conference win total in each of the last three seasons, winning 11 in 2015-16, 12 in 2016-17 and 13 in 2017-18. Before Austin Parkinson took over, IUPUI only had three double-digit wins in conference play and only one second place finish.
Close Encounters of a Basketball Kind
  • IUPUI has played in one-point games in two games this season (W vs. UT Martin, L/OT at Wisconsin). The last time IUPUI played in a one-point game the Jaguars beat North Dakota State 64-63 on Feb. 12 2016.  The last occurrence of playing in back-to-back one-point games for IUPUI was Jan. 19 and Jan. 24 of 2013 when the Jaguars beat South Dakota State (57-56) and UMKC (47-46).
  • Over the past five season, IUPUI is 3-2 in games decided by one point. The Jaguars are 11-7 in games decided by one possession, including a 3-2 record in games decided by three points or less last season.
  • Under Parkinson, IUPUI has 15-14 in one possession games and 5-6 in one-point games.
Magic Number 70
  • Scoring 70 points is an important sign for the Jags under head coach Austin Parkinson. In Parkinson's first eight seasons, IUPUI is 67-13 when hitting the 70-point mark. In those 13 losses, the most points scored by the Jags in regulation was 74 points. If IUPUI scores 75 points in regulation, the Jags are 57-0 under Parkinson.
  • The most points ever scored in a loss by the Jags under Parkinson was 83 in a 96-83 overtime loss to Miami (Ohio) in 2017.
  • IUPUI had won its last ten games when scoring at least 70 points before losing to Southern Illinois. IUPUI has since won three-straight when hitting the 70 points mark. All three conference wins have come with IUPUI reaching 70 points.
Hall of Points
  • Sydney Hall is the active leading scorer for IUPUI with 891 points.  With another 109 points this season, Hall could become the 25th player in school history to reach the 1,000 career point mark.
  • Hall is also the active leader in three-point shots made, having hit 187 in her career. Hall is now third all-time in school history and is 40 threes away from becoming the all-time three point shooter.
