JAGUARS HOST DETROIT MERCY TO START THREE-GAME HOMESTAND

IUPUI will host its first Class on the Court game, inviting over 500 school children to see the Jags take on Detroit Mercy Friday morning.

1/10/2019 9:50:00 AM

INDIANAPOLIS - IUPUI women's basketball returns from a two-game road trip to begin a three-game homestand against Detroit Mercy on Friday (Jan. 11). The game against the Titans will begin at 11 a.m. as the Jags are hosting Class on the Court, inviting over 500 school kids from around Indianapolis to the game.

The game will be streamed on ESPN+ with Andrew Kappas on the play-by-play call.

IUPUI (8-7, 2-2 Horizon) is coming off of its worst shooting performance of the season, hitting just 28 percent from the field against Youngstown State in a 52-70 loss to the Penguins. The Jags will look to rebound against a struggling Detroit Mercy team that enters the game 2-12 and 0-3 in the Horizon League. It could be a chance for IUPUI's offense to get back on track as the Titans are giving up 67.4 points per game and allowing opposing teams to shoot 44 percent from the field.

In the only two meetings with Detroit Mercy, both last season, IUPUI scored at least 90 points, the only time the Jaguars have scored 90-plus points in back-to-back games against a Division I opponent.

Macee Williams continues to lead the Jags and the Horizon League with 18.7 points per game but was held to just nine points against Youngstown State after dealing with foul trouble early in the game. Williams continues to be efficient on the offensive end, hitting 53 percent from the field.

The Jags are distributing the ball well on the offensive end, averaging 13.7 assists per game. That mark would be the highest season average in the last five years for the Jags. Holly Hoopingarner leads the team with 2.8 assists and Sydney Hall is second on the squad at 2.5.

QUICK NOTES (full game notes)

Jags Offense Freezes Against Penguins
  • IUPUI shot a season-worst 28 percent against Youngstown State, the lowest mark since IUPUI hit just 25 percent of their shots against Green Bay last season.
  • For the first time this season IUPUI did not have a player reach double-figures as Macee Williams and Holly Hoopingarner each scored nine points to lead the team. It was the first time all season that Williams did not reach double figures.
  • Macee Williams was held scoreless in the first half for the first time this season as the sophomore was saddled with foul trouble early in the contest.
  • The Jaguars committed just eight turnovers, tying their season low, but lost for the second time this season when winning the turnover battle. The other loss was an overtime defeat at Wisconsin when the Jags won the turnover battle 10-12.
  • IUPUI's 16 made free throws against YSU was the most in the last five games since hitting 17 against Ohio. The Jags have now made double-digit free throws in 12 of their 15 games.
Hooping It Up
  • Holly Hoopingarner is averaging 11.7 points per game which is second on the team. The junior has almost doubled her scoring output from her freshman and sophomore year after averaging six points per game.
  • Hoopingarner is leading the team with 2.8 assists per game and is second on the team with 4.1 rebounds per game.
  • The Greenwood, Ind., native is hitting 88 percent of her free throws, which is top-30 in the NCAA this season.
Close Encounters of a Basketball Kind
  • IUPUI has played in one-point games in two games this season (W vs. UT Martin, L/OT at Wisconsin). The last time IUPUI played in a one-point game the Jaguars beat North Dakota State 64-63 on Feb. 12 2016.  The last occurrence of playing in back-to-back one-point games for IUPUI was Jan. 19 and Jan. 24 of 2013 when the Jaguars beat South Dakota State (57-56) and UMKC (47-46).
  • Over the past five season, IUPUI is 3-2 in games decided by one point. The Jaguars are 11-7 in games decided by one possession, including a 3-2 record in games decided by three points or less last season.
  • Under Parkinson, IUPUI has 15-14 in one possession games and 5-6 in one-point games.
Magic Number 70
  • Scoring 70 points is an important sign for the Jags under head coach Austin Parkinson. In Parkinson's first eight seasons, IUPUI is 66-13 when hitting the 70-point mark. In those 13 losses, the most points scored by the Jags in regulation was 74 points. If IUPUI scores 75 points in regulation, the Jags are 56-0 under Parkinson.
  • The most points ever scored in a loss by the Jags under Parkinson was 83 in a 96-83 overtime loss to Miami (Ohio) in 2017.
  • IUPUI had won its last ten games when scoring at least 70 points before losing to Southern Illinois.
Hall of Points
  • Sydney Hall is the active leading scorer for IUPUI with 883 points.  With another 117 points this season, Hall could become the 25th player in school history to reach the 1,000 career point mark.
  • Hall is also the active leader in three-point shots made, having hit 185 in her career. Hall is now third all-time in school history and is 42 threes away from becoming the all-time three point shooter.
