INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI's men's tennis team picked up its first Horizon League win of the season with a 7-0 victory over Northern Kentucky on Sunday (April 1).
The Jags (7-12, 1-2 Horizon) split their two weekend matches after beating the Norse. IUPUI was beaten 5-2 by Wright State in the first weekend match on Saturday (March 31).
Against Northern Kentucky, IUPUI easily picked up the doubles point as #
David Beasley# and #
Grant Esposito# won the No. 3 match, 6-0, and #
Kyle Whittaker# and #
Ethan Mardanus-Budiono# won the No. 2 match, 6-1. To finish off doubles play, #
Bradley Luetschwager# and #
Grant Weaver# won the No. 1 match 6-3.
Mardanus-Budiono started singles play with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 5. Esposito kept the momentum going with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 6. #
Sean Bailey#'s 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 gave the Jags the match victory.
With the match in hand, Luetschwager won No. 4 (6-1, 4-6, 10-6), Beasley won No. 1 (7-5, 4-6, 10-3) and #
Eric Hollingsworth# took the No. 3 match (6-4, 7-6 (7-4)).
The first match of the weekend began well for IUPUI as the Jags earned the doubles point against Wright State. Beasley and Esposito took the No. 3 match 6-2 and Mardanus-Budiono and Newis took the No. 2 match 7-6 (7-3).
Singles play did not go as well for the Jags as Mardanus-Budiono earned the only match win, taking the No. 6 match 6-0, 6-2.
IUPUI will face cross-town foe Butler in its next match on Friday (April 6) at 12 p.m. at the West Indy Racquet Club and will travel to UIC to continue Horizon League play on Saturday (April 7).
