IUPUI BEGINS CONFERENCE PLAY HOSTING WRIGHT STATE

The Jags are looking to end a three-game losing streak as they take on the Raiders on Friday.

12/27/2018 12:25:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS – IUPUI women's basketball begins its second season of conference play looking to break a three-game losing streak as the Jags play host to Wright State on Friday (Dec. 28) at 7 p.m. The game will also be on ESPN+ for those who cannot make it to the Jungle and Andrew Kappes will be on the play-by-play call.

IUPUI (6-5) played a tough non-conference schedule and came out with some bumps and bruises, falling in its last three contests including an overtime loss at Southern Illinois the last time the Jags took the court. In the loss to the Salukis, IUPUI was led by Macee Williams who scored 20 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for her second-straight double-double and fourth of the season.

In the last three losses, the Jags normally stingy defense has been dented as IUPUI gave up 70+ points in each game. It was the first time IUPUI has allowed 70 points or more in three-straight games since November of 2014. That stretch of games also coincides with the last time IUPUI saw a losing streak of four games, something the Jags will be looking to avoid against the Raiders.

Matchups with Wright State have been close affairs after the Jags joined the Horizon League a season ago. IUPUI held off a rally by the Raiders for a 64-61 win in the first meeting last year but Wright State got its revenge winning two matchups in four games, including knocking the Jags out of the 2018 Horizon League Tournament Semifinals with a 60-52 win.

Wright State enters the game with an 8-4 record but lost their last game in overtime against Charlotte. Before the loss to the 49ers, the Raiders had won seven-straight games. The Raiders currently lead the Horizon League in rebounding pulling down 43.8 per game and do a lot of damage at the free throw line having shot (222) and made (158) league-highs.

QUICK NOTES (full game notes)
Williams Domination
  • Macee Williams continues to have a rock solid start to her sophomore year. The Veedersburg, Ind., native currently leads the Horizon League in points per game (20.1) and is second in rebounds per contest (8.7). Williams has also collected four double-doubles including two-straight.
  • Williams is the only player in the Horizon League to have reached double-digits in every game this season.
  • Despite averaging 18.5 points and 7.5 rebounds on her home court, Williams blistering away from the Jungle, pouring in 22 points per game and pulling down 10.2 rebounds, while shooting over 57 percent from the field.
A Well-Balanced Attack
  • For the first time this season IUPUI lost a game when having at least three players reach double-figures. For the season IUPUI had been 6-0 when reaching that mark before have four players reach 10+ points in the loss to Southern Illinois.
Kickstarting Conference Play
  • The Jaguars begin conference play on Dec. 28 when IUPUI plays host to Wright State. The Jags have lost two-straight to the Raiders, including a loss in the Horizon League Tournament semifinal a season ago.
  • In the Jags' favor is the fact that IUPUI has won its last four conference openers. The last time IUPUI lost a conference opening game was a 57-63 loss at South Dakota State in 2014. IUPUI is 6-2 in home conference openers under Austin Parkinson and have won the last two home conference openers.
Conference Success
  • Under Austin Parkinson, IUPUI has had unprecedented conference success. In the last six seasons, IUPUI has never finished worse than third and has four second-place finishes. During that time, IUPUI has never had fewer than nine conference wins and has had at least 11 wins in the other five seasons. The Jags finished with a school-record 13 conference wins a season ago.
  • IUPUI has increased its conference win total in each of the last three seasons, winning 11 in 2015-16, 12 in 2016-17 and 13 in 2017-18. Before Austin Parkinson took over, IUPUI only had three double-digit wins in conference play and only one second place finish.
Season Low
  • IUPUI was held to season lows in points (40), shooting percentage (32.6), free throw made (7) and free throws attempted (10) as the Jags fell to Northern Iowa 53-40. It was the lowest scoring output for IUPUI since scoring 34 against Green Bay on Jan. 15, 2018. The Jags were also held to a season low 20 points in the second half.
  • In the loss to Northern Iowa, IUPUI did not finish with a 20+ point scorer for the first time all season. The streak of six games with a 20+ point scorer tied the longest streak for the Jags, set in 2003.
Home Sweet Home
  • IUPUI has had unprecedented success at home under Austin Parkinson. In Parkinson's eight-plus years, the Jags have won a school-record 83-wins on their home court. From 2012-2016, IUPUI won at least 11 games in those five season inside of the Jungle, including two program-best 13-win seasons.
  • IUPUI had not had a 10-win season at the Jungle in Division I history (since 1998-99) before Parkinson took over the program. Before the Jaguars transitioned to Division I, IUPUI had five seasons with 10+ wins on their home court.
