YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – The IUPUI Lady Jags will look to continue their early success in Horizon League play when they take on the Youngstown State Penguins on Saturday at 4:15 p.m.
Head coach
Austin Parkinson's squad remains the last unbeaten team in the Horizon League after winning their first two matchups against UIC and Cleveland State. The game against Youngstown State will close out a six-game road trip the Jags have been on since Dec. 10. IUPUI has won four of the five games on the road trip so far.
Danielle Lawrence has led the Jags to their first two wins in the Horizon League having scored more than 20 points in both of the games so far. In the Jags last win, Lawrence scored 22 points on 7-for-9 shooting and hit all five of her free throws. Lawrence also moved in to 10
th place all-time on IUPUI's scoring list and is currently sitting at 1,299 career points.
Freshman
Macee Williams continues to do fantastic things for the Jags having reached double-figure points in the last four games and finished with her second double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds against the Vikings. Williams finished with a career-high eight free throws in the game. Williams currently leads all Horizon League players shooting over 68 percent from the field.
Behind Lawrence and Williams,
Tamya Sims is also in double-figures on the season, averaging 10.2 points per game and is coming off of a 10-point effort at Cleveland State. On the heels of a 13-point effort her last time out,
Jenna Gunn is averaging 10 points per game in conference play.
ALL-TIME SERIES: The Jags and Penguins will renew a series that was a conference series for three years when both schools were members of the Mid-Continent Conference. The Penguins lead the all-time series 6-4 but IUPUI won the last matchup in 2014 in Youngstown.
SCOUTING YOUNGSTOWN STATE: Youngstown State (6-8, 2-1 Horizon) comes in to the matchup having won its last game against UIC, 76-63. The Penguins are only averaging 66.7 points per game and have only one player scoring in double-figures on the season. Sarah Cash leads the team with 11.4 points per game, Cash is shooting almost 60 percent from the field and is making 76 percent of her free throws. Following Cash is Indiya Benjamin and Alison Smolinski who are both averaging 9.6 points per contest.
The three-point line is something the Jags will have to be aware of when playing the Penguins as Youngstown is tops in the league in three-point shots made having made 25 more threes than the second-place team. Youngstown State is also second in the league, hitting 34 percent from deep. Nikki Arbanas and Smolinski lead the team with 27 and 25 made threes, respectively.
QUOTABLE: "Youngstown has won six out of eight and are coming off of one of their best performances of the year," said Parkinson. "They have good post play and like to shoot the three ball so we will have to be ready defensively."
