JAGS HEAD TO NKU FOR #HLMSOC WEEKEND TRIP

IUPUI (0-6, 0-2 Horizon) will face Northern Kentucky (4-1-3, 1-0 Horizon) on Saturday night (Sept. 23)

Live Stats

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - Two streaks will collide on Saturday night (Sept. 23) when the IUPUI men's soccer team continues Horizon League play at Northern Kentucky (4-1-3, 1-0 Horizon) at 7:00 p.m.. The Jaguars (0-6, 0-2 Horizon)  look to snap a season-opening six-game winless streak while NKU is riding a six-game unbeaten streak since a loss to UC Irvine on Aug. 25.

Head Coach Brian Barnett's squad has faced an early season gauntlet, including a recent 3-0 loss at No. 10 Louisville on Tuesday night (Sept. 19). The Jags have played just two home matches thus far, dropping the Horizon League opener to Cleveland State before later falling to DePaul. Sophomore midfielder Pedro Valladao leads the team in points (3), shots (7) and shots on goal (4). Fellow Brazilian Yan Souza also has a goal, as does freshman back Tommy Patacca. Veterans Sam Gavin and Uriel Macias have assists so far this season.

Defensively, redshirt freshman Tyler Shanahan recently took over the starting goalkeeper job and has a 3.00 goals against average in his two starts. The Avon, Ind.-native has 14 saves in his two appearances with nine coming at Louisville earlier this week. Fellow redshirt freshman Michael Buck has a 2.00 GAA and 11 saves in four starts.

In the field, Barnett has continued to praise the back line of Gavin, Patacca, Harold Agyeman-Prempeh, Tyler Gainer and Nick Anderson. Agyeman-Prempeh and Gavin have yet to come off the field this season while Patacca has sat just six minutes through six games.

QUOTABLE: "Our young team continues to learn valuable lessons and will grow and mature from these experiences. Winning college soccer games comes down to taking advantage of opportunities when they present themselves and the team that capitalizes the most typically wins. We need to be better about creating those opportunities and capitalizing on them, while also limiting the opposition's chances. I think we've done a fair job of limiting opportunities, but we haven't been efficient enough in creating and converting when we've had chances," Barnett said after the 2-1 loss to DePaul.

JAGS WEEK OF GIVING: Sept. 15-23 marks the first-ever Jaguars Giving Week as the department is pushing to add 200 donors in a span of 200 hours. These tax deductible gifts help benefit the entire program or can be earmarked to benefit specific programs. That being the case, click here to get involved.

FORMER JAG EARNS MLS SPOT: After a long uphill climb, former IUPUI goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes recently inked a deal with the MLS FC Dallas as the team's third goalkeeper.

SCOUTING NKU: Northern Kentucky (4-1-3, 1-0-1 Horizon) has opened league play with a win over Belmont and a draw at Cleveland State. The Norse are 4-1-1 at home this season and have outscored foes 10-9 for the season. Rickard Lindqvist leads NKU with four goals and an assist while Tom Suchecki has two goals and two assists. Four different NKU players have a game-winner so far this season and four of NKU's scores have come via penalty kicks. Defensively, Jim Barkei has started all eight games in goal and has a 0.96 goals against average and 27 saves in 747 minutes. He's registered four shutouts on the season and a .771 save percentage.

INSIDE THE SERIES: IUPUI is 2-2-3 all-time against NKU and 2-1-3 in the program's Division I-era (1998-present). The last meeting was a 1-1 double overtime draw at Carroll Stadium last season on Oct. 26, 2016. IUPUI's last win in the series was on Sept. 21, 2014 when the Jags won 2-0 in Indianapolis. NKU's last win came on Sept. 30, 1998 in Indianapolis.

UP NEXT: IUPUI will return home to host Valparaiso on Tuesday night (Sept. 26) at 7:00 p.m. at the on-campus Michael A. Carroll Stadium. That match will be broadcast on ESPN3 as Morgan Adcock is on the call.
