INDIANAPOLIS – A substantial addition loaded with experience and leadership, head coach
Austin Parkinson and the IUPUI women's basketball program have announced the addition of
Colleen Day to the coaching staff Wednesday (June 14). Day joins the Jaguar family out of Miami (Ohio), where the highly touted former student-athlete and coach created a Hall-of-Fame resume with over a decade worth of experience behind the bench. Additionally, the Jags have also announced the promotion of assistant coach
Latrell Fleming to associate head coach.
"We are thrilled to welcome someone with Colleen's experience to our coaching staff," Coach Parkinson said of Day's addition. "Colleen has tremendous knowledge of the game and excellent recruiting ties here in the Midwest. I have no doubt she will help raise the level of our program with her work ethic and passion for the game."
Day finished her tenure in Oxford as the team's offensive coach, scouting coordinator and was tasked with developing posts and guards. She also specialized in alumni relations and was an academic liaison for the RedHawks, seeing the team record its highest-ever grade point average (GPA) during the 2014-15 season.
A member of several elite teams both as a coach and a player, Coach Day helped guide the RedHawks to 146 wins during her tenure as assistant coach. She was part of the team's 2008 MAC Tournament championship and NCAA Tournament appearance, as well as two Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) appearances in 2012 and 2013. Coach Day has mentored six All-MAC selections in addition to last season's freshman of the year.
As a player, Coach Day still ranks as one of the best-ever at Miami, being elected into the RedHawks hall of fame in 2015. She is 11th all-time with 1,269 points, fifth all-time with 794 rebounds, 10th all-time with 209 steals, led the team in scoring during the 2003-04 season and also was the top rebounder for three seasons. Her four-year career produced one of the highest free-throw percentages ever at Miami (.805), ranking seventh all-time and her efforts helped propel the team to a MAC Championship in 2004.
The promotion of Coach Fleming to associate head coach marks the hard working understudy's second promotion in as many years. A former director of operations, Coach Fleming thrived in an assistant coach's role and earned his way to a new title for the 2017-18 season.
"Coach Fleming has been instrumental in our success the last two seasons and is very deserving of the role of associate head coach," Coach Parkinson said of Coach Fleming. "I've been really impressed with his work ethic, ability to build relationships and on court skill development with our players."
Coach Fleming has been highly involved in the recruiting process at IUPUI, which includes one of their most highly coveted classes coming in for the 2017-18 season. After helping take the Jags to an unprecedented 24-win season in 2016-17 and the team's fourth trip to the WNIT in the last five seasons, the coaching staff seems reloaded and ready to continue to make history at IUPUI.
