NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. - Confidence is a crazy thing. The IUPUI women's golf team came into this week's Summit League Championships riding a wave of confidence, thanks largely to a strong showing at the Jaguar Invitational match play event in which they earned a runner-up finish and nearly tipped Butler for the title.
The early returns on this year's Summit League Championships is that the confidence has remained in place as the Jaguars are third among the nine-team field after Sunday's opening round. IUPUI posted a round of 312 and trail just Denver (296) and South Dakota State (297) after day one. Oral Roberts (313), North Dakota State (317) and South Dakota (319) are just off the Jaguars' early tournament pace.
"Today was a great day. Going into the tournament, I think we all felt pretty confident with the course and how it fit each of our golf games," senior
Lindsey Budnik said. "We were coming off a great tournament at Trophy Club and I feel our momentum really shined today.
"Personally, I struggled a bit to start my round, but was able to finish strong coming down the stretch. As a team, we all played the back nine better, which will help our momentum going into tomorrow's round."
Junior
Aneta Abrahamova led the Jaguars with an opening round 3-over 75 and led the field with 13 pars on Sunday. Abrahamova is tied for fourth among the 45-player field and is six shots off the lead. Behind her, senior
MeKenzie Hilsmeyer carded an opening round 77 and is tied for 11th overall while Budnik shot 7-over 79.
Sophomore
Lindsey Hackleman posted a 9-over 81 and senior
Erin Ingram carded a 10-over 82.
Ingram shot 1-under 35 after a disastrous opening nine holes while both Budnik and Hackleman were 2-over on the back nine. Ingram made a quadruple bogey on No. 9, but immediately answered with a birdie on No. 10 and made another birdie on the par-3 No. 14.
"We came out strong the first round and are paired with some great competition for the second round," Budnik said. "I am excited where we sit overall in the tournament and can't wait to see what tomorrow holds."
IUPUI will play with Denver and South Dakota State in round two and will begin teeing off at 9:50 a.m. Central.
