EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The IUPUI women's tennis team (2-12) returned from a long break by taking on Evansville Saturday night (March 19) in a road contest with the Purple Aces. Despite a valiant effort, the Jags couldn't do much in the way of points, falling in a 1-6 spring break contest.
The lone Jag to break through on the evening was
Samantha Mayer, who picked up a win at No. 3 singles with a 7-6 (4), 6-2 victory over Nicoli Pereira. Mayer was also strong alongside her doubles partner
Sara Sherif in their matchup at the No. 1 spot, securing a lopsided 6-1 set against Pereira and Diana Tkachenko. Despite their victory, the Jags dropped the doubles point with 4-6 and 2-6 sets at No. 2 and 3.
Mariella Pessina battled back after dropping her opening set, 2-6, to force a tie-break in the second. Despite her efforts, the No. 4 singles player fell 6-7 (6) in the second to surrender the point.
With the loss, the Jags will return home to take on Oral Roberts (March 24) in their second Summit League match of the season, beginning at 3:30 p.m. EST in the West Indy Racquet Club.
