INDIANAPOLIS – Wrapping up what has been a tough weekend for a battle-worn team, the IUPUI women's tennis team (0-7) fell in a pair of dual-meets Saturday (Feb. 4) and Sunday (Feb. 5), falling to the University of Indianapolis 0-9 and Eastern Illinois 0-7. The Jags played three meets in three days, a true test of stamina and endurance during the grueling stretch.
On Saturday, the Jags came very close to stealing a handful of points from the strong UIndy Greyhounds, as
Sara Sherif took her match the distance at the No. 2 singles spot. After dropping the opening set 3-6, Sherif came roaring back with a 6-1 second set to force a tie-breaker. With just a few swings marking the difference, she fell in the extended action, 7-10.
Molly Nguyen had one of the longest matches, as the young freshman saw the opening set slip away, 6-7 (2-7). After the gritty showing in the opening frame, she came very close again in the second set, falling late, 4-6.
On Saturday, the Jags once again were on the wrong side of a handful of marathon matches. Sherif came so close to victory once again, as a 6-2 opening set gave the senior a lead at the No. 1 spot. After battling to a heart-breaking 6-7 (3-7) second set, Sherif once again had to finish her match in a tie-breaker. Another couple swings marked the difference, as she fell, 9-11.
Mariella Pessina battled her way through a tightly-contested second set, as she and opponent Stella Cliffe deadlocked at 6-6. A tie-breaker would again decide the fate of the match, as Pessina fell 3-7.
Samantha Mayer went three sets at the No. 4 singles spot, falling 1-6, 6-3, 2-6.
With the losses, the Jags will look to pick up their first dual-meet victory Saturday (Feb. 11) against Missouri State at 3 p.m. EST in the West Indy Racquet Club.
