INDIANAPOLIS – A tough opening to a weekend full of action, the IUPUI women's tennis team (0-5) couldn't solve Dayton (2-3) Friday afternoon, falling to the Flyers 1-4 in a shortened meet. After dropping the doubles point, the Jags picked up just one point at the No. 1 singles spot.
The bright spot of the day for the Jags was
Valeriia Lavrenchuk, who came up big in a 7-6 (3), 6-2 victory over Marlys Bridgham at the No. 1 spot. She remained strong through both singles and doubles play, teaming with
Samantha Mayer to pick up a 7-6 (5) victory at the No. 1 doubles spot.
With the meet already decided before the conclusion of the No. 3 and No. 4 singles matches, Mayer and
Mariella Pessina were not able to finish their respective bouts, as both players were in a decisive third set after splitting the opening two.
With the loss, the Jags will look to bounce back Saturday (Feb. 4) as the team heads to the southern part of Indianapolis to face UIndy at 3 p.m. EST.
