INDIANAPOLIS – A game carrying plenty of weight in its significance towards tournament standings, the IUPUI women's basketball team (21-7, 11-4) will host Fort Wayne (5-23, 2-13) Saturday (Feb. 24) at 3 p.m. EST in the Jungle. The game will mark senior day for the Jags, as IUPUI will honor three student-athletes playing in their final home games.
With plenty left to fight for, IUPUI will be competing for a chance to be guaranteed either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed with a victory over the Mastodons. The Jags will need help to grab its first ever Summit League regular season title and No. 1 seed, as the final standings will also be determined by the South Dakota – Western Illinois game. If the Coyotes beat the Leathernecks, and IUPUI defeats Fort Wayne, the Jags will claim the top spot in the tournament.
Mikale Rogers,
Caitlyn Tolen, and
Kelsi Byrd will be playing in their final home game at the Jungle, as the trio will wave farewell to the home crowd with pre-game festivities scheduled to recognize their achievements. A win would equal Head Coach
Austin Parkinson's highest win-total against Summit League opponents, as he led his team to a 12-4 record during the 2012-13 season. It would also put the team just one win off of equaling its highest single-season win total in Division I history. The Jags are currently winners of four-straight games and 10 of their last 11.
This season,
Danielle Lawrence has led the team with 16.1 points per game as the team has shot a combined .440 from the field. She's currently fifth in the Summit League in scoring average. Rogers has added 13.2 points and 7.1 rebounds, while ranking second with 66 blocks on the year.
Jenna Gunn currently holds the top spot in the Summit League with a .548 field goal percentage, averaging 7.5 points per contest. The Jags own the best defensive scoring average, giving up just 56.3 points per game. Their opponents, the Mastodons, currently have the lowest offensive scoring average at 56.9 points.
In their meeting earlier this season, the Jags topped the 'Dons 62-48 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, as Gunn and Rogers both had 15 points in the contest. The Jags shot .535 in the game, limiting Fort Wayne to just 2-for-10 shooting from three-point range. IUPUI led by as many as 24 points in the game after three quarters.
