BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Starting off the busy weekend with an absolute slugfest in the opener, the IUPUI softball team (2-9) couldn't keep pace with Indiana State (3-3), as the Sycamores scored eight runs over the final two innings to take an 8-15 victory Friday (Feb. 24). The Jags led the game through the first three innings.
Four Jags finished with multi-hit games, as
Roni Patterson was one of the big bats for IUPUI. Patterson went 2-for-3 on the day with four RBIs, hitting a homerun and a double as part of six extra-base hits for the Jags.
Taylor Chitwood went 2-for-3 with a run-scoring double, while
Maggie Good also knocked a double in a 2-for-3 effort. Leadoff batter
Alyssa Matson finished 2-for-5 in the game, her fourth-straight multi-hit performance and ninth-straight game with a hit.
A single by Matson and a walk by
McKenzie Loge gave the Jags runners at first and second to start the bottom half of the first. A walk to
Delaney Thompson would load the bases, as Patterson pushed across her first RBI with a bases loaded walk. The bases would be cleared on a ball hit to right field by
Maggie Armstrong, which resulted in an error and three runs for IUPUI.
After seeing the Sycamores strike for two in the second, the Jags started the third inning with a single from Good. She'd come around to score on a double by Chitwood in the next at-bat. Chitwood was then plated on an RBI double down the right field line by Armstrong, as the Jags built a 6-2 lead.
Indiana State responded by hanging a four-spot in the fourth inning, then took the lead with a single run in the top of the fifth. A double by Good followed by a double from Patterson plated a run for the Jags as they once again tied the game at 7-7. Eight runs surrendered by the Jaguar pitching staff over the next pair of innings would eventually doom the Jags, as the only offense the team could muster was a solo homerun by Patterson in the bottom of the seventh. The Jags lost 8-15 in seven innings.
With the loss, the Jags will look to day two of the Western Kentucky Spring Fling with scheduled games against Illinois State and WKU.
