BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Embarking on the second day of their weekend venture in Kentucky, the IUPUI softball team (2-11) was dropped in a pair of contests by Illinois State (6-5) and Western Kentucky (8-4) Saturday afternoon (Feb. 25). The Jags were run-ruled in five innings by the Redbirds before surrendering eight unanswered runs to Western Kentucky.
Taylor Chitwood led the Jags on the day with a combined 2-for-6 showing, picking up a double and an RBI in two contests.
Maggie Good also went 2-for-6 with a homerun and three RBIs. No other Jag collected more than one hit.
Alyssa Matson picked up a hit in game one, extending her hitting streak to 10 games before seeing it snapped in game two.
Good started off game one with an RBI single in the top of the first inning, plating
McKenzie Loge and giving the Jags a 1-0 lead. IUPUI would only be able to scrape together four hits the rest of the way, as Illinois State picked up runs in every inning before hanging a three-spot in the fifth that ultimately ended the game.
Game two favored the Jags early on, as IUPUI broke through in the third inning for three runs.
Delilah Wright reached on an infield single, and was later brought home to score on a Chitwood double down the left field line. Good came up and uncorked a two-run homerun to right center field, as the Jags claimed a 3-0 lead. After a run by WKU in the bottom half, IUPUI went scoreless the rest of the game. The Hilltoppers were able to sling together six runs in a disastrous bottom half to the fourth inning, as the Jags were eventually put away, 3-8.
IUPUI will look to wrap up the weekend with a pair of games Sunday (Feb. 26) against Wright State and Austin Peay, beginning at 11 a.m. EST.
