INDIANAPOLIS – The IUPUI Lady Jags continue their four-game road trip with a stop in to Memphis to take on the Tigers on Wednesday night.
In keeping up with a trend so far this early season, IUPUI (4-1) will be taking on a team they have never faced before in Memphis. The Jags had previously never played Wyoming and had only played Northern Iowa, Georgetown (Ky.) and UCF once before.
The Jags bounced back from their first defeat of the season, a 63-59 loss to UCF, by beating Wyoming 65-59 to cap off their trip to Orlando for the UCF Thanksgiving Classic.
Danielle Lawrence led the Jags with 18 points off of the bench.
Holly Hoopingarner was second on the team with 16 points and
Tamya Sims added 14.
Against the Cowgirls, IUPUI jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never trailed in the game, marking the fourth game this season that the Jags have never been behind on the scoreboard.
IUPUI has a very balanced attack early this year with five players averaging at least nine points. Lawrence is tops on the squad with 13.2 points/game, including scoring 15, 16 and 18 points in her last three ballgames. Following Lawrence is
Sydney Hall at 10.4 points/game, then Hoopingarner (9.8),
Macee Williams (9.2) and Sims (9.0).
Jenna Gunn has been the main distributer for Austin Parkinson's squad averaging 3.2 assists per contest.
On the defensive end, Williams leads the team with 7.8 rebounds per game and the Jags hold a 6.4 rebounding margin on the year. The Jags are also outscoring their opponents by an average of 14 points per game and are forcing teams to commit almost five more turnovers per outing. IUPUI is also averaging 9.4 steals and 3.6 blocked shots per game.
Getting off to a hot start has been a hallmark of the Jags all year. IUPUI is outscoring its opponents 101-56 in the first quarter. The Jags have kept the pace up in the second, outscoring opponents 100-66 in the next frame. After the half is a different story as IUPUI has been outscored by nine in the third quarter (80-71) and the fourth quarter scoring has been tied at 77 through five games.
MORE HONORS FOR MACEE –
Macee Williams was
named Horizon League Freshman of the Week for the second time this season on Monday (Nov. 27). Williams pulled in her first double-double of her career with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the Jags narrow defeat to UCF.
SCOUTING MEMPHIS – The Tigers come in to the game with a 1-6 overall record and are on a six-game losing streak after starting the season with a win over Tennessee State. Memphis has played solid competition this year especially over Thanksgiving weekend when the Tigers faced No. 8 Ohio State and No. 21 DePaul. Scoring has been an issue for Memphis who enters the contest averaging 60.4 points but is being outscored by over 17 points per game. The tigers have allowed their opponents to shoot over 46 percent on the year.
Offensively, Memphis is led by Cheyenne Creighton who is averaging 15.7 points per game, shooting .478 from the field and knocking down 65 percent of her foul shots. Creighton is also the leading rebounder for the Tigers averaging 7.9 per game. After Creighton, Brea Elmore is scoring 12.7 points per contest and Alana Davis is averaging 7.5 per outing while shooting a team high 59 percent from the field.
QUOTABLE – "This is another opportunity for us to play in a road environment and see if we can meet the challenge," said Parkinson. "We must be ready defensively and have good shot selection on offense."
ALL-TIME SERIES – This is the first time that IUPUI and Memphis have ever met.
