Orlando, Fla. – The IUPUI women's basketball team is participating in the UCF Thanksgiving Classic over Thanksgiving weekend with two games against unfamiliar opponents.
The Jags will take on UCF on Saturday (Nov. 25) at 2:30 p.m., for just the second time in program history. IUPUI then finishes up the weekend with a game against Wyoming on Sunday (Nov. 26) at 11 a.m., in what will be the first ever meeting between the Jags and Cowgirls.
IUPUI will look to go 4-0 to start a season for the first time in school history when they take on UCF. The 3-0 start to the season is the best start for the Jaguars since 1996 and caught the eye of Mid-Major coaches who voted IUPUI
No. 21 in this week's CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25 poll.
The Jags have three players in double-figures this season with
Sydney Hall leading the way at 11.3 points per game after leading the team in scoring the first two ball games.
Danielle Lawrence is second on the team with 10.7 points per game and after a career-high 23 points against Indiana State,
Holly Hoopingarner is third on the team with 10.3 points.
Freshman
Macee Williams is the leading rebounder on the team averaging 7.0 per game and is also averaging 8.0 points per game. Williams was named the
Horizon League Freshman of the Week after the first week of the season. Fellow freshman
Agatha Beier has been a versatile weapon off of the bench for head coach
Austin Parkinson as she is averaging a team high 4.0 assists/game, 5.0 points/game and 4.7 rebounds/game. Beier is also shooting a team-high .556 from three-point range (5-for-9).
SCOUTING UCF – UCF (2-3) comes in to the weekend having lost two-straight including a 71-57 loss at home against Elon on Wednesday (Nov. 22). The Knights are 0-2 in Orlando with the loss to Elon and a season-opening loss to Mercer. Four players are scoring in double-figures for UCF, led by Aliyah Gregory who is averaging 16.0 points/game. Gregory is followed by Fifi Ndour (12.6), Zakiya Saunders (11.5) and Kornelia Wright (10.2). The first half has been a struggle for UCF as opponents have outscored the Knights in the first quarter, 84-69, and in the second quarter, 80-59.
SCOUTING WYOMING – Wyoming (3-0) is coming off of a win against Denver, 61-51 and is outscoring opponents by an average of 13.1 points/game. The Cowgirls are led by Liv Roberts who is averaging 15.3 points/game while shooting .625 from the field. She is also shooting .938 from the free throw line making 15 of her 16 attempts. Second in the team in scoring is Bailee Cotton at 9.3 points/game and Sladjana Rakovic is the top scorer off of the bench at 8.0 points/game. Overall the Cowgirls are shooting .444 from the field and holing opponents to just .367 shooting. Wyoming has a slight edge in rebounding (+4.7) but is losing the turnover margin to its opponents (-2.3). Wyoming will take on Northern Iowa on Saturday (Nov. 25) before taking on the Jags on Sunday.
QUOTABLE – "This will be a fun and challenging tournament playing at UCF," said Parkinson. "Both UCF and Wyoming are off to great starts and will require us to elevate our game to another level.
UP NEXT – After the trip to Orlando, IUPUI will spend two more games on the road with a Wednesday, Nov. 29 matchup at Memphis and a Saturday, Dec. 2 game at Ohio.
