EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. – The IUPUI women's tennis team finished out its fall season with a strong showing at the SIU-Edwardsville Indoor Invite over the weekend. The top finish belonged to
Krystal Grubb who took home third in the Flight D competition.
Grubb began her competition with a straight-set win (6-0, 6-4) over an opponent from Wright State. In the semifinal round, she fell to a competitor from SIU-E 4-6, 6-2, 10-7 before taking home third-place with another win in straight-sets; this one over a player from Southeast Missouri, 6-4, 7-5.
The Jags also earned two consolation bracket championships in both the Flight A and Flight C competitions.
Playing in the Flight A competition,
Valeriia Lavrenchuk lost in three sets (4-6, 6-2, 10-2) but then rebounded against two conference opponents. In the consolation semifinal against a member of Wright State's team, Lavrenchuk pulled out the three set win after falling in the first set, 2-6, 6-1, 10-6. In the final she faced a Panther from Milwaukee and again went three sets, winning 6-7, 7-6(0), 10-7.
In Flight C,
Samantha Mayer lost in the first round 6-3, 6-3 and moved on in the consolation round by default in her next match. In the consolation final, Mayer's opponent was from Milwaukee and the senior won the match 3-6, 6-2, 10-6.
In doubles, the team of Mayer and Grubb earned a win against a squad from Milwaukee 6-1 and then beat a Wright State team 6-2 in the consolation final.
