DAYTON, Ohio – The IUPUI women's tennis team competed in the Wright State Raider Invitational over the weekend. The Jags got strong play from all five student-athletes involved in the tournament featuring multiple Horizon League schools.

"It was great to see some conference opponents, just being new in the Horizon League," said head coach Marisa Arce. "We had a good record against conference opponents and now have a better feeling for the competition."

Senior Valeriia Lavrenchuk played No. 1 singles and took home second place after winning her first match against Noelly Nsimba from Youngstown State (6-4, 7-6(4)) and beating Jillian Milano from Wright State (7-6(2), 6-2) in the semifinals. In the championship match, Lavrenchuk fell short against Paula Comella from Bowling Green, 6-3, 6-3.

In the No. 2 singles draw, freshman Kristi Tinsley took her opening match from Mattea Kilstofte of Dayton, by a score of 7-5, 7-6(5). Tinsley lost to Ayumi Sasaki of Bowling Green 3-6, 6-0, 14-12 in the semifinals and in the third place match, fell to Luisa Echeverry from Akron (6-3, 6-2).

Freshman Krystal Grubb played one of the closest matches of the tournament in her first-round loss to Youngstown State's Lucia Zagar. After winning the first set 7-5, Grubb lost the next two sets 6-7(5) and 8-10. After beating Madison Riley 6-4, 6-2 in the consolation bracket, Grubb lost in the consolation final in another three set match to Natalie Allen of Dayton (6-4, 4-6, 10-5.).

At the No. 5 singles spot, senior Hayley Trinkle lost her opening match 6-2, 6-1 to Dayton's Anna Delaney but won the consolation final 6-3, 6-3 over Alyssa Defiglio of Northern Kentucky.

In No. 1 doubles action, the team of Lavrenchuk and Tinsley lost to Bowling Green in a tiebreaker, 7-6(3) but beat Wright State (6-4) and Youngstown State (6-2) to win the consolation final.

Grubb and junior Mariella Pessina teamed up in No. 2 doubles and also lost their first match of the tournament 6-1 to Dayton before bouncing back to win the consolation bracket with wins against Akron (6-4) and Youngstown State (6-1).

"I know the girls all feel good coming off the weekend," said Arce. "All of the losses were close and that gives us things to improve on for the next tournament. The team is super motivated to get back on the court at the ITA Regionals.

IUPUI will be back on the court at the ITA Regionals in Nashville, Tenn., beginning on October 12.
