MACOMB, Ill. – Heading into a rematch of their New Year's Eve Summit League opening win, the IUPUI women's basketball team (14-6, 4-3) will head west to take on Western Illinois (15-5, 5-2) in a battle of the number three and four spots in the Summit League standings. The Jags topped the Leathernecks in their previous bout, 66-52.
After seeing their magnificent season temporarily derail after losing three straight games, the Jags have rebounded with a three-game winning streak, topping Denver, Oral Roberts and North Dakota State at home. For the year, the Jags are averaging 67.3 points per game on .434 shooting as team, which includes a .388 clip from three-point range.
Danielle Lawrence was named the CollegeSportsMadness Summit League Player of the Week after picking up 56 points in two games last week. For the season, she's averaging 15.7 points per game, and is second on the team with 44 assists.
Mikale Rogers is averaging 13.2 points and 7.3 rebounds, while
Sydney Hall has been magnificent from three-point range, averaging 10.8 points on a .490 three-point shooting clip.
Since losing to IUPUI, Western Illinois strung together four consecutive wins before falling to South Dakota State Saturday (Jan. 21). The Leathernecks win-streak included a 110-point outburst against North Dakota State, just their third-highest scoring output of the season. They've also netted games of 118 and 113 points. Emily Clemens of the Leathernecks ranks second in the Summit League with 18.7 points per game, as the guard has also amassed a League-high 131 assists, clearing the next closest player by 47. Three players for WIU fill the top-three spots for steals, as the Leathernecks generate a League-high 20 turnovers per game defensively. The Jags lead the League with 57.9 points allowed per game.
Areas of concern in the matchup will come from the pressure the Leathernecks are able to generate in the paint. Offensively, the Leathernecks are third in the Summit League with a .777 clip from the free-throw line, while the Jags commit a League-high 18.6 fouls per game. WIU is the best rebounding team with 38.8 per game, while the Jags muster just 33.1, third-lowest. Isolating players and cutting off pass lanes will be a key for the Jags defense, as they try to slow down the Leathernecks' League-leading 80.5 points per game and 18.2 assists.
In their last matchup, IUPUI held WIU to just a .339 shooting percentage and held Clemens to just eight points. Four Jags finished in double-digit points, as Lawrence, Rogers, Hall and
Jenna Gunn made up the entire scoring line for IUPUI. Hall had a game-high 22 points on 7-for-8 shooting from three-point range.
