INDIANAPOLIS – A big opportunity to bounce back after a disappointing road trip, the IUPUI women's basketball team (11-6, 1-3) will return to the safe confines of the Jungle Saturday (Jan. 14) as the team hosts the Denver Pioneers (3-13, 0-3) at 3 p.m. EST. This is the first game the Jags will play on their normal home court in a month.
After opening up Summit League action with an emphatic win over a chaotic defense in Western Illinois, the Jags have since seen things unravel, going 0-3 during a three-game road trip against Omaha, South Dakota, and South Dakota State. The Leathernecks, the Coyotes and the Jackrabbits are all currently tied for the top spot in the Summit League with a 4-1 record. The Jags will enjoy a stretch of three games at home starting with Saturday's bout.
On the year, the team has seen their scoring average drop down to 67.8 points per game after being above 70 points for a fair portion of the season. The Jags are shooting .435 from the field and .387 from long-range. After holding opponents to an average sub-.400 clip the majority of the season, the defensive average for IUPUI has raised to .403. The Jags are outrebounding opponents by 1.2 boards per contest.
Danielle Lawrence and
Mikale Rogers are both averaging over 14 points per game, while Rogers leads the team with 7.4 rebounds.
Sydney Hall is also adding 10.8 points per contest.
Historically, the Jags have had good success against the Pioneers, owning a 7-2 all-time record. IUPUI last faced Denver on Valentine's Day (Feb. 14) last season, downing the Pioneers 67-54 in Denver, Colorado. The Jags last loss to Denver came during the 2013-14 season, in which IUPUI was ousted in the Summit League Tournament 69-76 in overtime.
The Pioneers are on a six-game losing skid, having last won a game Dec. 6 in Denver against Pepperdine. They were most recently blown out by 25 points on the road against Western Illinois, 62-87. The team averages 64.8 points a game, but have given up an average of more than 71. The team is shooting .409 for the season and suffer from nearly a -6 rebound margin. The Pioneers average just a hair under 16 turnovers per game.
