CHICAGO - The IUPUI men's soccer team will be in Chicago on Sunday (Sept. 11) to face the DePaul Blue Demons at 4:00 p.m. Eastern at Wish Field.
The contest marks the fourth of six true road matches to start the season ahead of the Sept. 23 home opener against Summit League foe Western Illinois as Head Coach
Brian Barnett's team has already faced a non-conference gauntlet. Of those six matches, half will come against power conference teams as IUPUI will face two BIG EAST (Butler & DePaul) and a Big Ten (Indiana) foe.
QUOTABLE
"There's no goals that are (the goalkeepers) fault. Rare is it that the goalkeeper can be the only blame on a goal. There's usually six to eight mistakes that take place over the course of the field before it gets to them. Too many times, we were asking (the goalkeepers) to make big time saves over the course of the last matches and we weren't able to do it," said Barnett after the Western Michigan match.
SCOUTING THE JAGUARS
IUPUI comes in at 0-3 on the season with road losses at Bowling Green, Butler and Western Michigan. Juniors
Jordan Parron and
Uriel Macias have the team's two goals and freshman
Pedro Valladao has the team's lone assist. Both sophomore
Josh Gray and redshirt freshman
James Mitchison have earned starts in goal and combined on a 4.67 goals against average and 17 saves. Sophomore back
Ben Thornton leads the Jaguars field players, having played all 270 minutes so far this season. Senior
Cristian Soto is just off his pace, having played 260 minutes.
SCOUTING THE BLUE DEMONS
DePaul has opened the season at 2-1-2 overall and 2-0 at home. The Blue Demons have victories over Albany (3-0) and Northern Kentucky (4-1) and are coming off a 1-1 double overtime draw at Summit League opponent Omaha on Friday.
Erik Rodriguez leads DePaul with three goals scored while Stijn Van der Slot and Simon Megally have a team-high two assists. Quentin Low has played the majority of the team's minutes in net, notching a 0.75 goals against average and 14 saves in his five appearances.
For the year, DePaul has outscored opponents 10-5 and is yet to be shutout this season.
INSIDE THE SERIES
Sunday's contest will be the first-ever meeting between IUPUI and DePaul in men's soccer.
LAST TIME OUT
IUPUI is coming off a 6-0 loss at Western Michigan as the host Broncos buried the guests with four first half goals in Mitchison's first career start in net. The Jaguars' best scoring chance was a Soto penalty kick midway through the second half, but the WMU keeper dove right to knock down the opportunity.
UP NEXT
IUPUI will trek west to face Grand Canyon in Phoeniz, Ariz., on Thursday, Sept. 15 at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.
