CLEVELAND, Ohio - The IUPUI women's tennis team (6-13, 1-1) didn't get the result they wanted to start a lengthy stretch of road matches. The Jags fell 6-1 to Cleveland State on Saturday (Apr. 9) with the lone point coming from sophomore Samantha Mayer in a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) win at No. 4 singles. The rest of the squad posted a solid effort, not giving any easy outs to Cleveland State.
The doubles pairing of junior Rachel Swartwood and freshman Mariella Pessina posted a 6-2 loss in No. 2 doubles before Mayer and junior Sara Sherif were beaten 6-3.
The first five singles finishes were losses for IUPUI. Rachel Swartwood took her opponent to three sets (6-2, 7-6, (7-5)) at No. 2 singles while the other four losses included solid efforts. Senior Bobbi Modesto and sophomore Valeriia Lavrenchuk battled opponents to 6-4, 6-2 results at No. 6 and No. 1 singles, respectively.
Sherif looked poised to challenge at the No. 3 singles spot losing the first set just 7-5 before a 6-0 second set loss. Pessina challenged as well but fell 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 5 spot.
Mayer finished the day with the lone point for the Jags who now look ahead to next weekend in South Dakota. IUPUI will play South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D. next Friday (Apr. 15) at 2 p.m. before a 10 a.m. dual with South Dakota State in Brookings, S.D. on Saturday (Apr. 16). The Jags are still 1-1 in Summit League competition.
