WOMEN'S TENNIS TO HIT ROAD AT CLEVELAND STATE

Freshman Brigitte Swartwood continues brilliant stretch

Live Results

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The IUPUI women's tennis squad has completed their home matches for the 2016 season and now take to the road. The Jags were 5-5 inside the West Indy Racquet Club this spring during nearly two months of consecutive home matches.

With the remaining five matches on the road over the next two weeks, IUPUI looks to continue its success beginning with Cleveland State this Saturday (Apr. 9).

"Away matches have both their perks and drawbacks," head coach Marisa Lambropoulos said. "Being on the road is always a fun time to spend together as a team, but we will be a little out of our comfort zone. If possible, I try to make sure we get a hit in on their courts the day before the match."

IUPUI (6-12, 1-1) faces a hot Cleveland State group (8-7, 4-0) that's won four-straight matches. The Jags and Vikings shared similar opponents in recent memory. Both IUPUI and CSU edged Butler 4-3 this season. Both squads were victorious over Bowling Green as well this year.

Freshman Brigitte Swartwood has been on a tear as of late. The Evansville, Ind. product has been apart of three-straight doubles wins with partners Valeriia Lavrenchuk and Mariella Pessina. She's also reeled off five-straight singles victories and hasn't lost in singles play since late February.

"Brigitte has done a great job at the number six spot this season," Lambropoulos added. "It's always a great feeling to see that confidence in one of your players."

Lavrenchuk has been a force in doubles play as well. In her last five matches, she's conducted four wins, two with each of the Swartwood sisters. Dating back to February, Lavrenchuk is 2-0 when paired with Brigitte Swartwood and 4-2 in matches with junior Rachel Swartwood.

IUPUI's match with CSU is the last before a four-match finish in conference play. The Jags finish up with South Dakota, South Dakota State, Omaha and Oral Roberts in an eight-day stretch to close the season.

"Only the top four teams in the league make the Summit League Championships, so one of our goals is to make the tournament for sure," Lambropoulos said. "I believe if we keep practicing hard and show up to each match ready to leave it all out there, we'll be very successful in conference play."

Saturday's match begins at noon in Cleveland, Ohio.
