LONG BEACH, Calif. - Freshman Amairany Cruz continued to impress by breaking her own 800 record as four Jaguars competed in the Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State on Saturday (Apr. 16). Cruz torched her record, spinning a time of 2:11.95 to win her heat and place 35th of 129 runners.

Cruz ran 2:12.75 the night before at Mt. SAC, then a school record.

"Overall, this weekend has been a success," IUPUI Head Coach Antonio McDaniel said. "We had multiple PR's and a couple school records. That's why we fly out here - for the great competition and great weather.

"Am just continues to amaze Ashley and I every time she competes. This weekend was a perfect simulation of conference with two 800's in a row and she showed herself that she can run fast back-to-back days. This is huge for her confidence."

Three others ran the 1,500, paced by senior Leah Brooks' personal best efforts. Brooks ran a time of 4:43.01 to finish second in her heat while freshman Allie Wright ran 4:56.46. Senior Julie Riggins ran a time of 5:00.64.

"It was a great weekend with two PR's in one weekend for Leah in the 5K and 1,500, which is not an easy feat," McDaniel said. "I'm so proud of how she's competing this outdoor season, especially since it's her senior year. It would be easy to have a slump while student teaching, but she's managed to compete at an even better level."

The Jags will be back in action next weekend when they participate in the Lenny Lyles/Clark Wood Invitational, hosted by the University of Louisville.
