CHITWOOD COMES UP CLUTCH IN 9-8 WIN OVER MIAMI

Jags snap losing streak in dramatic fashion

OXFORD, Ohio - Clutch hits and a strong relief outing give the Jags a 9-8 comeback win against Miami, Ohio, and ended the Jags four game losing streak in the process.

Taylor Chitwood delivered with a go-ahead two run single in the bottom of the sixth and Brooke Boetjer gave the Jags five innings in relief only giving up one run.

"It's a really big win for us," said Chitwood. "We have been struggling here for a little bit but it is really good to have our team string things together."

The Jags got things started quickly in the first inning scoring four runs. Ali Mosier and Morgan Schlobohm singled to start the inning. Two batters later, Kaitlynn Moody singled to center field to score Mosier.

A Chitwood walk loaded the bases as the rain started to fall. Maggie Armstrong walked in the next at-bat to bring in a run and make it 2-0. Alyssa Neff delivered with a single just inside third base and brought home two runs to increase the lead to 4-0.

Miami scored on a ground out to short for its first run of the game and added another on a single to center field in the next at-bat.

In previous games, the Jags had struggled bouncing back after a team scores but this time after a single and a walk, Moody crushed a shot to right field for her first home run of her career putting the Jags up 7-3.

Moody finished 2-3 on the night including the three-run home run and has reached base in nine straight games.

"[The home run] felt really good especially because even though I have been hitting well, they aren't the hits I want to get," said Moody. "Finally, I was like 'I need to do this' and we had been working all week. It feels awesome."

The excitement did not last long for the Jags as Miami struck back in the top of the third. An error by Mosier allowed the first runner to reach and the dam broke. A triple from Taylor Shuey scored the first run. An infield single by Lauren Anderson brought home run number two.

Two batters later, Johniann Wahl drove a shot to center field and scored Anderson to make it 7-5. Boetjer (5-3) entered the game for Finch to try to stem the tide but threw a wild pitch in the next at-bat to bring home the inning's fourth run. After an illegal pitch, the five run lead evaporated and the game was tied at 7.

IUPUI looked like it had taken the lead in the bottom of the inning after a wild pitch but Sarah Lawrence was called out on the tag at home to end the inning and keep the game tied.

In the top of the fifth, Miami took the lead when Eryn McCarver singled through the right side and scored Jenna Jones to make it 8-7 Red Hawks.

The Jags seemed to be in position to respond after Chitwood doubled and Armstong walked with one out, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the inning.

Down a run in the bottom of the sixth, #Delilah Wright beat out an infield single to lead off the inning. After a Mosier strikeout, Schlobohm singled on a bunt to put runners on first and second. Patterson grounded out to shortstop but moved the runners to second and third.

In one of the biggest at-bats of the game, Moody drew a walk on a full count to extend the inning and load the bases. This brought up Chitwood, who drew a full count before driving a single over the shortstop's head in to left field and brought home Wright and Schlobohm to give the Jags the 9-8 lead.

"[That hit] felt great," said Chitwood. "I just knew that if Moody was going to get on with a walk or a hit, I was getting ready in the batter's box. I was just ready to hit the ball."

"The way Chitty was hitting the ball today I had all the faith in her that something was going to happen," said head coach Amanda Rivera.

Needing three outs to end the game and break the losing streak, Boetjer got a ground out to start the seventh. A single down the line in the next at-bat put the tying run on base. After a ground out for the second out, an illegal pitch moved the tying run in to scoring position. McCarver, hit a line shot to third that was going to tie the game but Chitwood snagged the line drive out of the air at third for the final out and complete the comeback for the Jags.

"That felt really awesome. I felt like Derek Jeter," Chitwood said. "I didn't really know that it was in my glove until I saw it there."

"That's a big win for our program," said Amanda Rivera. "Its good to get the heartbeats going and everything on the line where every pitch is that important. It is going to help us in the end and hopefully it is going to help us in May when it really counts."

IUPUI plays two more games in the Miami Invitational tomorrow (Mar. 6) against Canisius (12:30 p.m.) and Miami (5:30 p.m.).
