OXFORD, Ohio - The Jags fell behind early and could not make up the difference as they lost for the second time to Canisius, 5-3. The loss is the fifth in the last six games for IUPUI.
Things started well for the Jags (6-11) as
Ali Mosier and
Morgan Schlobohm both got on base. Kaitlynn Moody's ground out to short with one out brought home Mosier and gave the Jags the early lead. In the next at-bat
Taylor Chitwood drove a ball to left center to bring home Schlobohm and put IUPUI up 2-0.
The second inning proved disastrous for the Jags and starter
Brooke Boetjer (5-4). A leadoff double started the inning and the runner moved to third on an illegal pitch. Another illegal pitch brought the run home for the Golden Griffins (4-12). After the second outs, back-to-back walks were followed by a home run by Lindsey Silfer to left field to chase Boetjer from the game after one-and-two-thirds innings.
Nickole Finch came in to relieve Boetjer for the Jags and threw well over the next four-and-two-thirds only giving up one run, a sacrifice fly to right field in the third inning. Finch finished the game with five strikeouts only giving up two hits.
The Jags got a run back in the fifth inning after loading the bases with one out. Finch helped herself out with a sacrifice fly to right field to bring home the run to make it 5-3. With runners on the corners,
Sarah Lawrence popped up to the short stop in short left field to end the inning.
In the sixth the Jags had another chance to climb back in the game as they put runners on the corners with only one out. Schlobohm's sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second but
Roni Patterson popped up to the short stop to end the threat.
Chitwood reached base in the seventh with one out but a foul out by Boetjer and a strikeout by Armstrong ended the game.
The Jags finish their time in Oxford with a matchup against Miami, Ohio with first pitch at 5:30 ET.
