OFFENSE AWAKENS IN RUN RULE WIN OVER MIAMI

Jags pound two home runs and 13 hits in victory

OXFORD, Ohio - Roni Patterson and Sarah Lawrence each hit a two run home run in the third inning as the Jags beat Miami Ohio 10-1 in five innings. It was the first game of the year the Jags have won by the run rule.

"It's about time," said head coach Amanda Rivera. "There is one thing I think we are really good at, getting the barrel to the ball. And when we do that and keep it simple I think we are a really scary team."

"I think we made an awesome comeback, having lost the game before, and having our roller coaster of a season," said Patterson. "But it was great to come out and run rule such a great team."

Again, things got started early for IUPUI (7-11) as the first two runners of the game reached base. After two outs, the Jags were in danger of leaving the runners stranded but Patterson delivered with her first of three hits in the game with a single to right, scoring Delilah Wright for the first run of the game.

Miami (7-8) tied up the game in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded, but that was all the Red Hawks would manage as Kaitlynn Moody shut down the threat forcing a groundout two batters later.

The Jags started to blow the game open in the top of the third. With one out, Moody singled up the middle. Patterson followed Moody with a deep home run to dead center field. Patterson's third home run of the season gave the Jags a 3-1 lead.

"I really wanted to make improvements from my last game and make adjustments and I did that," Patterson said. "I am really happy I could pull that out for my team."

After an Ali Mosier fly out, Kristin London singled to center field to keep the inning going. This brought up Lawrence, who had been 1-11 in her last six games. Lawrence broke out of her slump in the best way possible, hitting a hard line drive that cleared the left field fence and put IUPUI up 5-1.

"It felt really good," said Lawrence. "I struggled the first game but I talked with my coaches and we decided I needed to get my hands up higher and drive down through the zone."

The Jags continued to pummel Miami pitching in the fifth inning. Moody started the inning off with her second single of the day and Patterson's single moved Moody in to scoring position. Mosier's single to right scored Moody making it 6-1.

London struck out but reached after the catcher dropped the third strike to load the bases. After Lawrence popped out, Alyssa Neff walked to bring home another run.

With a chance to take an eight run lead and possibly end the game early, Rivera pinch hit Maggie Good for Wright. Like Lawrence, Good had been struggling, having not gotten a hit in her last six at bats. But also like Lawrence, Good broke out of the slump at the right time. A line drive up the middle scored two and put the Jags up 9-1.

"We believe in these kids, and we believe in the work they do all week," said Rivera. "Its great to see them get those big hits. Maggie Good is an unbelievable hitter and it is nice to see her show it."

IUPUI added another run in the next at-bat on Brooke Boetjer's pinch hit double off the left field fence.

It was all the offense the Jags would need on a night when starter Moody and Nickole Finch, who came on in relief, shut down the Red Hawks offense. Finch (1-2) picked up her first win by going the final three innings and only giving up one hit.

"When we hit our levels and attack the zone how we want to it is unbelievable," said Rivera. "Finch did a great job keeping those kids off balance."
