SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – With the regular season behind them and high-hopes riding into the Summit League tournament after another successful season under the tutelage of sixth-year head coach
Austin Parkinson, the women's basketball team (20-9, 11-5) will take on Omaha (14-14, 7-9) Sunday (Mar. 6) at 3:30 p.m. in first-round action. The Jags' hold the No. 3 seed while the Mavericks maintain the No. 6 spot.
IUPUI is led on the season by
Danielle Lawrence and
Mikale Rogers with 13.4 and 12.8 points per game, respectively. The duo have excelled against Summit League opponents, raising their totals to a combined 29.1 points per game (15.0 and 14.1). Lawrence has led the Jags' in scoring in 12 games this season, while Rogers has led in nine. Lawrence tallied a season-high 34 points in a 96-87 win over Western Illinois (Feb. 6), while Rogers went off for 27 points in a crushing 104-30 victory over Oakland City (Nov. 24). The performances are the two highest single-game totals for the Jaguars this season. Lawrence is also third in the Summit League with 49 blocks. They dyad were recently named to the First-Team All-Summit League.
The Jags' wrapped up the regular season on a strong run, winning seven of their final nine games. The two losses came at the hands of top-ranked South Dakota (Feb. 27) and the Mavericks of Omaha (Feb. 18). The road loss (54-57) to Omaha interrupted what had been a five-game winning streak for IUPUI, a drastically different result from their earlier meeting when the Jags' won 75-59 (Jan. 13).
Omaha closed out the regular season with a 70-60 win over Denver (Feb. 27). The Mavericks battled to a respectable 3-3 record over their final six contests, also beating IPFW and IUPUI during the stretch. They're led on the season by Mikaela Shaw, who has a Summit League-high 511 points, averaging 18.3 per game. Shaw also ranks third in the league with a 52.5 percent efficiency from the floor. Shaw's teammate, Remy Davenport, is fourth in the league with 64 converted three-pointers (38.6 percent) while Caroline Hogue leads the Summit League with 83 blocks. Against the top three teams in the league, the Mavericks are 1-5 over the course of the season.
Other matchups this weekend include No. 1 South Dakota (24-5, 15-1) against No. 8 Denver (5-24, 3-13), No. 2 South Dakota State (23-6, 13-3) against No. 7 IPFW (7-22, 3-13), and No. 4 Oral Roberts (13-15, 10-6) against No. 5 Western Illinois (15-14, 8-8).
