JAGS POWER PAST GEORGETOWN WITH THREE HOME RUNS

IUPUI falls 10-0 to North Carolina in second game

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - After a slow start to the season the Jags offense exploded for a season high 12 runs in a 12-7 victory against Georgetown. The Jags also finished with a season high 14 hits and three home runs.

IUPUI (5-7) got off to a hot start in the first inning. Ali Mosier led off with a double and Morgan Schlobohm moved her to third with a bunt single.

In the next at bat, Roni Patterson crushed her first home run to straight away center field to give the Jags a 3-0 lead.

Two batters later, Maggie Good joined in on the fun taking a pitch over the left field fence for her first long ball of the year and extend the lead to 4-0.

Georgetown (2-9) responded in the top of the third with a two out rally. With two runners on, a single up the middle scored the first run for the Hoyas. After a wild pitch by Kaitlynn Moody brought another run home, Sarah Bennett doubled to the right center field wall two score two runs and tie the game at four.

In the fourth inning, the Jags used a two out rally of their own to regain the lead. Mosier started the rally with a double off the top of the left field wall. Schlobohm reached on an error after the third baseman overthrew first base, which allowed Mosier to score.

Patterson's high popup to third was dropped, which scored Schlobohm and moved Patterson to second. On the third pitch of the next at bat, Taylor Chitwood launched a home run to left field, her second of the season, and gave the Jags an 8-4 lead.

The struggle getting out of an inning hurt the Jags again in the fifth. With two runners on and two outs, Moody gave up a three run home run to Grace Appelbe to bring the Hoyas back within one. Georgetown kept the rally going after two errors and a single loaded the bases, but Moody got a strikeout to keep the bases loaded and keep IUPUI up one.

The two out magic continued for the Jags in the bottom of the inning. Sarah Lawrence singled to right, Ashley Ousley walked, and Mosier walked to load the bases. Maggie Armstrong pinch hit for Schlobohm and delivered with a single up the middle to score two.

The inning continued as Patterson singled through the left side to score Mosier and Chitwood capped the rally with a single to right field to give the Jags a 12-7 lead.

Brooke Boetjer relieved Moody in the sixth and pitched well in relief for the Jags only giving up one hit while striking out two and keeping the Hoyas off the board for the last two innings.

North Carolina 10 - IUPUI 0 - 5 innings

The second game of the day did not go as well for the Jags as earlier in the day. North Carolina (6-6) jumped to an early lead and continued to rack up the runs on route to a 10-0 run-rule victory in five innings.

In the bottom of the first, North Carolina got to starter Nickole Finch early. The first two batters of the inning reached base, and after a strikeout, a single through the right side brought home both runners. The next at bat, Kendra Lynch went down the first base line to bring home another run and give the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead after one.

On the first pitch of the bottom of the second, Darby Rosen hit her first home run of the season to make it 4-0. Later in the inning, Kristen Brown hit a sacrifice fly, increasing the lead to 5-0.

Things got worse for IUPUI in the fourth inning after Finch loaded the bases with no outs. A single up the middle scored two and chased Finch from the game down 7-0. Erica Tharp entered the game for Finch and her first pitch was crushed by Brown over the left field wall for a three run home run and gave the Tar Heels the 10-0 lead.

The game ended due to the run rule after the fifth when IUPUI went down in order.

Offensively the Jags struggled, finishing with two hits, a single from Schlobohm and a double from Good. Good was the only player to reach second for IUPUI in the game.

The Jags finish their time in Chapel Hill tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. taking on Butler.
