OFFENSE WAKES UP IN 6-2 WIN OVER GREEN BAY

Jags pound out 14 hits in victory

ROSEMONT, Ill. – IUPUI used a balanced offensive attack as 10 Jags tallied a hit in a 6-2 win against Green Bay Friday (Feb. 19). The six runs and 14 hits are season highs for IUPUI.

For the third game in a row the Jags (2-5) struck first. Ali Mosier started the game with a triple in to right field and was scored on a ground ball from Morgan Schlobohm.  With two outs, Taylor Chitwood drew a walk and a Maggie Good single put Chitwood on second. Ashley Ousley capitalized with a single to center field to score Chitwood and put the Jags up 2-0.

In the bottom of the second the Jags showed they can flash the leather as well. Chitwood started the show with a great stab on a ground ball in the hole for the first out. Mosier followed it with a diving stop to her left at second for out number two, and Brooke Boetjer snagged a line drive back up the middle to end the inning.

The Jags stretched their lead in the top of the fourth. Schlobohm singled and was moved to third on a Roni Patterson double. Chitwood blooped a single to left to score both runners and moved to second on the throw home. The next batter, Good, drove a single to right to bring home Chitwood and extend the lead to 5-0.

In the top of sixth the Jags added an insurance run in the form of a Chitwood sacrifice fly to right center field.  The RBI gave Chitwood her second three-RBI game of the season.

Boetjer gave the Jags another solid performance in the circle, stifling Green Bay's (3-4) hitters. Boetjer threw her second straight complete game, giving up two runs on nine hits, while striking out five Phoenix batters.

Iowa 7 - IUPUI 1
In the first game of the Total Control Sports Invitation, the Jags were overwhelmed by Big Ten foe Iowa, 7-1. It was a quick start for the Hawkeyes that doomed IUPUI at the Dome at Rosemont.

The Jags (1-5) got off to a fast start in the top of the first when Schlobohm reached on an error. Patterson singled up the middle and Chitwood continued her hot start to the season with a double to left center to score Schlobohm and give the Jags the 1-0 lead.

The lead would not last long as Iowa (3-3) stormed back in the bottom of the inning. After a groundout, two singles and a walk loaded the bases. Another single tied up the ballgame and chased starter Kaitlynn Moody from the game.

Nickole Finch entered and struck out her first batter for the second out but scored a run on the next four at-bats to take a 5-1 lead after the first inning.

Iowa increased the lead in the second after a leadoff double by Sammi Gyerman. Gyerman advanced to third on a sacrifice fly and scored on a ground out in the next at-bat.

The Jags had a chance to cut in to the lead in the top of the third after a Good ground rule double put runners at second and third, but back-to-back popouts ended the threat for IUPUI.

IUPUI got great pitching from freshman Erica Tharp in relief. Tharp only gave up one run and five hits over five innings, while striking out three.

The Jags will be back in action for two games tomorrow (Feb. 20) with the first one scheduled for 10 a.m. (ET) against Lipscomb.
