SLU Results I SIUE Results

O'FALLON, Ill. - The IUPUI men's tennis team's string of 'close but no cigar' outcomes continued on Sunday (Feb. 14) as the Jaguars dropped road matches at Saint Louis and SIU Edwardsville. The Jags fell to SLU 4-1 in the morning match, before dropping a 4-3 heartbreaker at SIUE in the early afternoon.

IUPUI slid to 2-10 on the spring season while SLU improved to 8-1. SIUE climbed to 1-5 with Sunday's win.

IUPUI opened with a doubles point win against Saint Louis, getting wins from Akshay Verma and David Beasley at No. 2 by a 7-5 score and a win from Patrick McAuley and Matt Moe at the No. 3 spot by a 6-3 score. Singles play saw three of the six courts split sets, with Saint Louis winning two of those matches. SLU got straight set wins at Nos. 4 and 6 to take the lead and then got three set wins at the top two spots.

Beasley fell at No. 1 by a 2-6, 6-0, 6-2 score and Bradley Luetschwager dropped his match at No. 2, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1. The matches at Nos. 3 and 5 singles were left unfinished as the Jaguars had to travel and prepare for the afternoon match at SIUE.

In the afternoon match, the Jaguars once again captured the doubles point, this time with Luetschwager and Kyle Whittaker winning at No. 1 6-3 and the tandem of Beasley/Verma winning at No. 2, 7-6 (7-3).

Like the morning though, the Jags coughed up the lead with losses at Nos. 5 and 3 to fall behind 2-1. Beasley won in come-from-behind fashion at No. 1 by a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 score at the top spot to tie the match. However, Luetschwager lost at No. 2 just before Whittaker won at No. 4 to tie the match at 3-3 with just the No. 6 players remaining. SIUE's Jack Desse topped Mikel Saavedra by a 7-5, 6-3 score to seal the outcome.

IUPUI will be back in action next weekend when the Jaguars play road matches at Xavier (Feb. 20) and Michigan State (Feb. 21).
