INDIANAPOLIS – Currently in the midst of a seven-game winning streak and their best start in program history, the IUPUI women's basketball team (7-1) will host another big-time matchup as the Jags welcome the Ohio Bobcats (6-0) to the Jungle Saturday (Dec. 10) at 3 p.m. EST. The matchup features a pair of CollegeInsider top-25 mid-major programs, as the Jags come in ranked 24th while the Bobcats are ranked fourth.
A season of unprecedented success, the Jags are shooting .448 this year from the field and are averaging just over 70 points a game. History continues to be rewritten during the Jags epic start to the 2016-17 campaign, as the team has not only recorded the best start in program history, but have accomplished numerous firsts during the stretch. The Jags defeated Missouri 73-45 on Dec. 4, marking the first time in program history the team defeated a Southeastern Conference (SEC) opponent. Against Georgia Southern (Nov. 26), the Jags converted 16 three-point shots, the most ever at IUPUI in a single game. Against Illinois-Chicago, Head Coach
Austin Parkinson recorded the 98th win of his career at IUPUI, becoming the all-time winningest coach in the history of the Jags, surpassing Kris Simpson. He'd later record his 100th victory against Georgia Southern. The team's 45-35 victory against Indiana State (Nov. 30) marked just the second time in Coach Parkinson's tenure as Head Coach that the Jags scored 45 points or fewer and won the game, a testament to the strong defensive effort the Jags have put forward this season.
The Bobcats have been perfect to start the season, most recently dropping Duquesne 64-46 at home (Dec. 3). The well-rested team is averaging 70.3 points per game this year, shooting .397 from the field. Guided by a strong defensive presence, the Bobcats have limited their mistakes to an average of 14.0 turnovers, but are forcing 22.3 turnovers per game. They own a +8.3 turnover margin, coming in just a touch under 12 steals per game. The team also averages 4.5 blocks per contest, besting the Jags 3.9 average. Having a very limited history together, the Jags were victorious in their only contest against the Bobcats, dropping the team 84-75 back on Nov. 30, 2001. The 'Cats have seen some of their best success come in the third quarter this season, as the team owns a +42-point margin.
Saturday's home game and the Wednesday (Dec. 14) contest against Tennessee Tech mark the final pair of games to played in the Jungle for the month of December. The Jags home bouts against IU-Northwest (Dec. 28) and the Summit League opener against Western Illinois (Dec. 31) will be played in at the Indiana Fairgrounds inside the Coliseum, part of a Jags double-header feature with the men's basketball team. Those games are set to air on ESPN3.
