JAGS HEAD EAST AS @IUPUILADYJAGS FACE VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH

The contest marks a rematch of the one-point thriller from just a season ago.

Listen Live

RICHMOND, Va. – After emerging victorious late in their road opener, the IUPUI women's basketball team (2-1) will head east to Richmond as the team is slated to face Virginia Commonwealth (2-1) Tuesday (Nov. 22) at 6 p.m. EST.  The game features a rematch of one of the tightest contests for the Jags last season.

This year, IUPUI is led by senior center Mikale Rogers, who is averaging 14.7 points and 7.7 rebounds per game.  Both stats are team-highs.  Six players are currently averaging double-digit points, as the Jags have demonstrated a well-balanced offense in the early parts of the year, getting contributions throughout the lineup.  Danielle Lawrence, Caitlyn Tolen, and Holly Hoopingarner are all averaging 11.0 points-per-game.

Against Illinois-Chicago Saturday (Nov. 19), the Jags received a 23-point contribution from Rogers as part of a late surge to pull away from the Flames, eventually prevailing 67-57.

Facing Virginia Commonwealth for just the second time in program history, the Jags meet the Rams for the second-straight year.  Last season, IUPUI hosted VCU, winning a thriller with the final score, 70-69.  The Jags actually held a 17-point lead at halftime in the game, only to watch the Rams come roaring back in the second half.  The Rams outscored the Jags 44-28 over the final two quarters, but the Jags stayed strong when it mattered most.  Down 67-69 with 27 seconds left to play, Rogers hit a layup at the seven second mark to tie the game, but was fouled on the play with a chance for the and-one.  She dropped it in, and Akilah Sims blocked a shot on the other side to preserve the one-point edge.

This year, the Rams have picked up victories over Coppin State and Campbell, while dropping a 10-point contest to Minnesota.  The team sports a .413 field goal percentage, while shooting .229 from three-point range.

The Jags are shooting .466 and .288, but have been impressive at the free-throw line.  As a team, IUPUI is 41-for-51 (.804), making good on their opportunities at the charity stripe.

Saturday marked the 98th win in the IUPUI career of Head Coach Austin Parkinson, who surpassed Kris Simpson to become the all-time winningest coach in program history.
