JAGS SPLIT DUELS WITH CARDINAL STRITCH AND MARQUETTE

IUPUI beat Cardinal Stritch 4-3, before falling to Marquette 5-2

MILWAUKEE - IUPUI split its doubleheader Friday (Jan. 22) with a win against Cardinal Stritch and a loss against Marquette. The Jags (2-3) opened the day with a hard fought 4-3 victory over the Wolves but fell to the Golden Eagles 5-2.

Cardinal Stritch (0-1) took the first match of doubles 6-2, but sophomore Patrick McAuley and freshman Matt Moe won their No. 3 doubles match 6-2 to tie up the doubles session. In the No. 2 match, Abel DeCosta and Will East knocked off David Beasley and Akshay Verma 7-6, to give Cardinal Stritch the doubles point.Ā 

Beasley continued his winning ways on the singles side, winning his No. 2 match against East, 6-3, 7-5, and junior Marcus Nalley won the No. 3 match, 7-6, 6-4, to give IUPUI a 2-1 match lead. McAuley lost his No. 6 singles match in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 and Jac Newis fell in three sets as well at No. 1, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. The losses gave Cardinal Stritch a 3-2 lead and a chance to win the match.

In the No. 5 match, senior Louis Sacks lost his first set, but rebounded to win the next two, winning the match 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, to tie up the duel at three. In the final singles match of the day Jose Calero went three sets in the No. 4 match winning 6-4, 6-7, 6-4, to give the Jags the 4-3 win.

In the night cap, Marquette (1-0) got off to a strong start winning the No. 2 doubles spot 6-1 over McAuley and Moe. The Golden Eagles took the doubles point with a 6-4 victory in the No. 3 match against Sacks and Calero.

In singles competition, IUPUI's No. 1, Newis, and No. 4, Calero both lost their matches 6-3, 6-2. In the No. 2 and No. 5 spots, Beasley and Kyle Whittaker both fell 6-2, 6-3.Ā 

Playing the No. 3 spot for the Jags, Nalley earned a point with a 7-6, 6-2 win. McAuley, playing No. 6, also notched a point with a three set win, 3-6, 6-4, (11-9).

IUPUI will hit the road again next weekend when they take on Cleveland State on Friday, Jan. 29, scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m. It will be the first of three matches that weekend in the state of Ohio for the Jags.Ā
